Chapter 9 - The Birthday of Light

In October of that year, the farmhouse was filled with the rich scent of baking vanilla cake, fresh strawberries, and warm chocolate.
It was the quadruplets' sixth birthday.
The grand living room was decorated with hundreds of pink, silver, and gold balloons. Streamers hung from the wooden rafters, and a giant banner across the fireplace read: HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY EMMA, LILY, SOPHIE & GRACE!
Over thirty local children, schoolteachers, and neighbors filled the house and backyard, laughing, playing games, and enjoying ice cream.
At the center of the long dining table stood a massive four-tier birthday cake.
Each tier was decorated differently to match each girl's personality: Emma’s tier had golden stars; Lily’s had painting palettes; Sophie’s had forest animals; and Grace’s had soaring butterflies.
Sitting at the head of the table in four comfortable wooden chairs were the birthday girls, wearing matching pastel party dresses and small silver tiaras.
Dr. Sarah Harrison and Arthur Pendelton stood near the kitchen island, enjoying glasses of sweet punch, watching Nathan cut large slices of cake for the cheering kids.
"I’ve known Nathan for forty years, Arthur," Dr. Harrison said softly, a warm smile on her face. "I was worried he’d never recover after Claire died. He buried himself in work because he didn't know how to handle the grief."
Arthur nodded, taking a sip of his punch. "Grief makes powerful men do foolish things, Sarah. But love... love brings them back to who they were meant to be."
Nathan walked over to his daughters with four plates of cake, setting them down gently in front of each girl.
Emma looked up at her father, her gray eyes shining with pure, untainted happiness.
"Daddy?" Emma asked softly.
"Yes, my sweet girl?"
"This is the best birthday in the whole world," Emma said, reaching out her small hand to squeeze his fingers. "Better than any dream."

Nathan leaned down, pressing a long, loving kiss against her forehead, then did the same for Lily, Sophie, and Grace.
"Every day with you girls is the best day of my life," Nathan whispered softly.
