Chapter 10 - The Stars Above the Valley

Late that night, after all the guests had gone home and the quiet valley was wrapped in a blanket of bright, twinkling stars, Nathan walked up the stairs to the second-floor bedrooms.
The four quadruplets shared a large, sunlit master suite with four cozy four-poster beds arranged in a circle around a central play area.
Nathan stepped quietly into the dim room.
The night-light in the corner—a brass lamp shaped like a crescent moon—cast a warm, golden glow across the room.
All four girls were tucked into their beds, wrapped in thick, warm feather quilts.
Nathan walked to each bed, tucking the blankets around their shoulders, kissing their foreheads, listening to their deep, peaceful breathing.
When he reached Grace’s bed near the window, he noticed she was still awake, staring out at the dark night sky.
"Gracey?" Nathan whispered, sitting on the edge of her mattress. "Why aren't you sleeping, sweetheart?"
Grace turned her head, her big gray eyes reflecting the starlight from the window. She reached out from under the blanket and pointed up toward a bright cluster of stars shining directly above the valley.
"I was showing Mommy Claire my birthday cake," Grace whispered softly.
Nathan felt a warm, sweet tightness in his chest. He reached down and took her small hand into his broad palm.
"What did she say?" Nathan asked gently.
"She said she loves the butterflies on my tier," Grace smiled, her eyelids growing heavy with sleep. "And she said she’s happy because Daddy came back to keep us warm."
Nathan swallowed the lump in his throat, pulling the quilt up to Grace’s chin and smoothing her golden curls.
"Daddy is never going anywhere, Gracey," Nathan whispered, leaning down to kiss her cheek. "I’ll be right here every morning, every night, and every second in between."
Grace let out a soft, satisfied sigh, her eyes drifting shut as she slipped effortlessly into a peaceful sleep.
Nathan stood up slowly and walked over to the large bay window overlooking the quiet valley.
Outside, the snow-capped mountains rested under a vast canopy of a million shining stars. The cold, dark shadows of his past—the boardrooms, the betrayal, the moldy bread on a cold table—were gone forever, burned away by the fierce, unshakeable power of a father's love.
Nathan looked up at the brightest star in the sky, smiled softly, and whispered into the quiet night:

"I kept my promise, Claire. They’re warm now."
And in the quiet, peaceful room behind him, his four daughters slept in total, unbreakable safety.
