Chapter 5 - The Snake's Counterstrike

While the Caldwell mansion slowly healed, a storm was brewing in the legal courtrooms of Denver.
By Monday morning, Harrison Vance—Vanessa’s arrogant, real-estate mogul father—had assembled a team of ruthless high-profile attorneys to launch a vicious counter-attack.
In a crowded courtroom in downtown Denver, Harrison Vance stood before a dozen news cameras, looking indignant and deeply offended.
"My daughter is an innocent victim of Nathan Caldwell’s corporate paranoia!" Harrison declared into the microphones. "Nathan Caldwell abandoned his children for six months to pursue business deals! He is an absent, unfit father who is using his vast wealth to frame my daughter to avoid a costly divorce settlement!"
Inside Arthur Pendelton’s private office overlooking the city, Nathan sat in a leather chair, watching the news broadcast on a wall-mounted monitor.
Beside him, Arthur was reviewing a stack of legal filings.
"They’ve filed a counter-suit, Nathan," Arthur warned, his expression dark. "They are alleging that you orchestrated the neglect to create grounds for an emergency divorce without financial payout. They’re demanding full temporary custody of the quadruplets and immediate access to the Caldwell Trust funds."
Nathan didn't look angry. His face was like carved stone.
"They want custody of my daughters?" Nathan asked, his voice deathly quiet.
"It’s a financial maneuver," Arthur explained. "If Harrison Vance gets temporary custody, he gains control of the five-hundred-million-dollar trust Claire set up for the girls before she died. Vance’s real estate firm is three days away from total bankruptcy. He needs that trust fund to survive."
Nathan turned his head to look out the floor-to-ceiling window at the snowy city below.
"Arthur," Nathan said softly.
"Yes, Nathan?"
"Who is the lead judge assigned to the custody hearing?"
"Judge Evelyn Thorne," Arthur replied. "She’s notoriously tough, completely immune to political pressure, and holds child welfare above everything else."
Nathan stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Good. Call a press conference for three o'clock today."

Arthur blinked in surprise. "A press conference? Nathan, you’ve spent your entire career avoiding public drama."
"I spent six months hiding in boardrooms while my children were starving," Nathan said, his eyes burning with absolute, terrifying resolve. "It’s time the world sees what happens when someone touches my family."
