Chapter 4 - The First Sunrise

When the morning sun rose over the snow-capped peaks of Aspen on Christmas Day, the master suite of the Caldwell mansion was bathed in a gentle, golden warmth.

The massive king-sized bed was covered in four heavy feather duvets.

In the center of the bed lay the four quadruplets, dressed in soft flannel pajamas that Dr. Harrison’s assistant had rushed over from a local shop. Their small cheeks were flushed pink from the warmth of the room, and their breathing was deep and peaceful.

Beside them on the bed, sitting propped against the plush leather headboard, was Nathan.

He hadn't slept a single minute. For six straight hours, he had sat there in the quiet room, watching their small chests rise and fall, holding Lily’s hand whenever she stirred, smoothing Emma’s curls, tucking the blanket around Sophie, and listening to Grace’s soft breathing.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Nathan slid carefully out of bed, ensuring the blankets remained tucked around his daughters, and opened the door softly.

Carter stood in the hallway, holding a tray with fresh orange juice, warm oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and toast.

"Dr. Harrison said they need light, warm food every three hours, sir," Carter whispered. "The kitchen staff from the downtown hotel arrived an hour ago. We cleared out all the caterers' trash from downstairs."

"Thank you, Carter," Nathan said, taking the tray. "How are the gates?"

"Reporters are starting to gather at the lower road," Carter reported grimly. "Vanessa’s legal team tried to file an emergency bail application in Denver, but Judge Miller denied it. She’s staying in holding until Monday."

Nathan nodded coldly. "Keep the reporters off the property. If any photographer uses a long lens toward the nursery windows, confiscate their gear."

"Understood, sir."

Nathan walked back into the bedroom and set the tray on the bedside table.

As the scent of warm toast and cinnamon floated through the air, Emma’s big gray eyes slowly fluttered open. She looked around the giant, sunlit room, her gaze resting on the crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, then on the warm tray of food, and finally on her father.

She sat up slowly, clutching the duvet to her chest. "Daddy?"

"Good morning, sweetheart," Nathan smiled softly, sitting on the edge of the mattress. "Merry Christmas."

Sophie, Lily, and Grace stirred awake one by one, rubbing their eyes, blinking at the bright morning light.

Lily looked at the tray of food, then reached out a cautious hand toward the warm bowl of oatmeal. She looked up at Nathan with wide, hesitant eyes. "Is this... for us?"

Nathan felt a sharp, agonizing stab in his chest, but he kept his smile warm and bright.

"Everything in this house is for you, Lily," Nathan said, pulling the tray closer and handing each of them a small silver spoon. "Eat as much as you want. And when you’re done, we have a whole mountain of Christmas presents to open downstairs."

Sophie looked at her sisters, then looked at Nathan. "Is Mama Vanessa coming back?"

The room went completely still.

Nathan leaned forward, taking all four of their small hands into his broad, warm palms. He looked into their identical gray eyes with absolute, unshakeable honesty.

"No, Sophie," Nathan swore softly. "She is never coming back. Nobody is ever going to hurt you, ignore you, or leave you in the cold again. I am staying right here. From today on, it’s just us."

Grace swallowed a spoonful of warm oatmeal, a faint, beautiful dimple appearing on her pale cheek for the first time in six months. "Promise, Daddy?"

"I promise on my life, Gracey," Nathan whispered.
