Chapter 6 - The Web Expands

The denial of bail sent shockwaves through the local financial and political elite.
Within forty-eight hours, Vance Financial Management collapsed entirely. Federal regulators from the Securities and Exchange Commission, alerted by our state filings, swooped in to freeze all company assets, discovering that Julian’s fraud extended far beyond our mother. He had been preying on dozens of elderly, vulnerable clients, draining their retirement accounts to fund his lavish lifestyle, Chloe’s designer wardrobe, and Marcus’s real estate venture.
I sat in my corner office at the State Capitol, looking out at the autumn rain streaking down the glass. On my desk lay a hot cup of coffee and a thick file labeled OPERATION VAMPIRE.
There was a knock on my door, and my lead investigator, Detective Frank Miller, stepped inside carrying two pizza boxes and a fresh folder.
"You haven't gone home in three days, Elena," Frank said, setting the food on my desk. "Eat something before you collapse."
"I'll rest when every rat involved in this scheme is in a cage, Frank," I replied, opening the new folder. "What did we get from Marcus’s office?"
Frank pulled up a chair and opened a slice of pizza. "Marcus thought he could hide behind corporate shields, but once we executed the search warrant on Apex Real Estate Development, his assistant sang like a canary. Marcus was actively helping Julian falsify land deeds to transfer your mother’s lake property into his name."
"Did he know about the physical abuse?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.
"He did," Frank said softly, pulling out a printout of text messages retrieved from Chloe’s seized phone. "Look at this thread from three weeks ago."
I pulled the page closer, reading the text messages exchanged between Chloe and her brother Marcus:
Marcus: Is the old woman going to sign the deed transfer today? The buyers are getting impatient. Chloe: She's being stubborn. Says she wants to talk to her lawyer. Marcus: Julian needs to handle her. Do whatever it takes to get her signature on that line by Friday, or the whole deal falls through and we all go down. Chloe: Julian tied her up in the bedroom. She'll sign by tonight once she gets tired of crying.
My hands began to shake with a rage so cold and absolute it felt like ice in my veins.
"Intentional torture for financial gain," I whispered. "Marcus wasn't just an accessory after the fact. He was a co-conspirator in the extortion and torture."
"We arrested Marcus at his country club an hour ago," Frank revealed with a cold grin. "He was on the ninth hole when the troopers pulled up in three cruisers. He tried to claim he had diplomatic immunity because he sits on the Governor’s Economic Council."
"Not anymore," I said, pulling a fresh stack of indictment papers toward me. "Add grand larceny, criminal extortion, and conspiracy to commit elder abuse to Marcus's docket. And tell the grand jury we are seeking maximum sentences without concurrent time."
"What about the doctor?" Frank asked. "Dr. Harrison?"
"Harrison signed a full confession twenty minutes ago in exchange for a plea deal," I replied, signing my name across the bottom of Marcus’s indictment. "He admitted that Julian paid him fifty thousand dollars under the table to draft a fraudulent medical competency evaluation declaring my mother incapacitated, while simultaneously supplying Julian with illicit sedatives."
I leaned back in my chair, looking at the board of mugshots pinned to my office wall: Julian, Chloe, Marcus, and Dr. Harrison. The entire syndicate of predators who had turned my mother’s golden years into a living hell.

"They thought they built an impenetrable fortress, Frank," I said quietly.
"They built it out of paper, Elena," Frank replied. "And you just threw a match on it."
