Chapter 2 - The Table Is Turned

The dining room table was set with pristine porcelain plates, sterling silverware, and expensive crystal wine glasses—a grotesque display of wealth funded entirely by the woman they were slowly breaking in the upstairs bedroom.
Chloe was pouring a glass of vintage Pinot Noir, her heavy diamond bracelet clinking against the bottle neck. Julian sat at the head of the table, tapping away on his iPad, looking every bit the successful suburban financial planner.
"There she is!" Julian beamed, looking up as I walked into the dining room. "Where's Mom? Is she resting? You know how easily she tires out, Elena. It's really best if we keep her routine strictly managed."
I walked over to the side sideboard, poured myself a glass of ice water, and turned around to face them. I didn't sit down.
"Mom is upstairs resting," I said calmly. "She was quite talkative while I helped her change."
Chloe’s hand froze for a microsecond on the wine bottle before she forced a thin, patronizing smile. "Oh? You know how her mind strays, Elena. Half the time she thinks it's 1995. You shouldn't take anything she says seriously. Dementia makes elderly people deeply paranoid. They invent stories."
"Is that right?" I asked, taking a slow sip of water. "Does dementia also cause deep, dark ligature rope burns around both wrists?"
The air in the room instantly turned to ice.
Julian’s smile vanished, replaced by a sudden, dangerous stillness. Chloe set the wine bottle down on the table with a hard clack.
"What did you just say?" Julian asked, his voice dropping an octave, losing every trace of its cheerful brotherly warmth.
"Or perhaps," I continued, stepping closer to the table, "dementia causes severe, purple blunt-force trauma across her ribcage and lower back? The kind of injuries that correspond precisely with being shoved against a bedframe or struck with a blunt object when she refuses to sign transfer documents for her investment accounts?"
Chloe stood up so fast her chair scraped violently against the hardwood floor. "How dare you! We have sacrificed three years of our lives taking care of that ungrateful old woman! We gave up our vacations! We gave up our peace!"
"You didn't give up anything, Chloe," I snapped, my eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "You sold her lake cabin for four hundred and fifty thousand dollars three weeks ago. You transferred her annuity payouts into a private shell account registered under your maiden name. And when she asked where her money went, my brother tied her to a bedpost like an animal."
Julian’s face flushed an ugly, mottled red. He slammed his hand down on the table, making the crystal glasses ring. "Listen to me, you arrogant bitch! You don't come into my house after disappearing to your fancy city job and start making accusations! I have legal power of attorney! I have a certified medical evaluation stating she is incompetent! Anything I do, I do as her legal guardian!"
"A medical evaluation signed by Dr. Harrison?" I asked, pulling my phone from my pocket. "Your golf partner? The one currently under investigation by the State Medical Board for prescription fraud?"
Julian froze.
"You thought you were so clever, Julian," I whispered, walking slowly around the table toward him. "You thought because Mom was isolated, because you smashed her phone and intercepted her mail, that no one would ever look behind those drawn curtains. You calculated that I was too busy with my career to notice."
"You have no proof," Chloe snarled, her voice high and panicked. "It's your word against ours! We'll have you thrown out of this house for trespassing! Julian, call the police!"
"You don't need to call them, Chloe," I said, pointing toward the front windows.
Outside, blue and red strobe lights suddenly cut through the darkness, illuminating the closed living room curtains. The heavy thud of multiple car doors slamming reverberated through the quiet suburban street.
Footsteps echoed up the front porch steps, followed by three loud, authoritative knocks against the front door.
"State Police!" a loud voice boomed from the porch. "We have a felony warrant for the arrest of Julian Vance and Chloe Vance! Open the door immediately!"
Julian backed away from the table, his eyes wide with absolute panic, looking at me as if he were seeing a stranger for the very first time.

"What did you do?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "Elena... what did you do?!"
"I brought the state," I replied coldly. "And we are going to dismantle you piece by piece."
