Chapter 5 - The Bail Battle

Courtroom 4B was packed to capacity when I stepped through the double oak doors.
On the left side of the room sat Jonathan Sterling, a legendary defense attorney known for getting wealthy white-collar criminals off on procedural technicalities. Sitting beside him in orange prison jumpsuits were Julian and Chloe. Julian looked pale and unwashed, his slick hair now messy, while Chloe sat staring at her cuffed wrists, trembling violently.
On the right side of the aisle sat my mother, wrapped in a soft blue coat, flanked by two victim advocates and Captain Reynolds. I walked past the defense table without giving my brother a single glance and took my position at the prosecution podium.
Judge Thorne took his seat on the bench, slamming his gavel down once. "We are here for the bail hearing and preliminary evidentiary review in State v. Julian Vance and Chloe Vance. Mr. Sterling, you filed an emergency motion to suppress?"
Sterling stood up smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "We did, Your Honor. The State has engaged in an appalling abuse of power here. Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance utilized her official position, her private access to this court, and state law enforcement resources to launch an illegal midnight raid on my clients' home over what is fundamentally a private family dispute regarding elderly care."
Sterling turned slightly to face the gallery, trying to play to the press. "Ms. Vance acted as investigator, prosecutor, and judge. She entered the premises under false pretenses, manufactured evidence of injuries that could easily be attributed to age-related falls, and coerced a confused, demented old woman into making false allegations!"
"Are you finished, Mr. Sterling?" Judge Thorne asked coldly.
"We move for the immediate dismissal of all charges, the release of my clients on their own recognizance, and an immediate investigation into Ms. Vance’s prosecutorial misconduct," Sterling concluded, sitting down with a satisfied smirk.
Judge Thorne looked over at me. "Ms. Vance?"
I stood up, holding a single black USB drive between my fingers. I walked calmly to the center of the courtroom floor.
"Your Honor," I began, my voice echoing powerfully through the room. "Defense counsel speaks of procedural technicalities because he cannot defend the unspeakable cruelty of his clients' actions."
I walked over to the defense table and plugged the USB drive into the court's audiovisual system.
"The defense claims the evidence was manufactured," I said, pressing play on the remote control. "Let us look at the manufacturing."
The giant monitors mounted on the courtroom walls suddenly lit up. High-resolution, forensic photographs of my mother’s injuries filled the screens—the deep, purple ligature rope marks around her wrists, the massive black-and-blue contusions across her frail ribs, the horrific swelling on her back.
A collective gasp echoed across the gallery. Two news reporters leaned forward, furiously typing on their laptops.
"These injuries were documented and timestamped by me, a certified officer of the court, prior to any search warrant being executed," I stated, stepping toward the jury box. "Furthermore, the forensic toxicology report conducted by the State University Hospital on Saturday morning confirmed the presence of Lorazepam in Evelyn Vance's bloodstream—a powerful sedative she was never prescribed, but which was purchased in bulk by Chloe Vance at a pharmacy thirty miles away."
Chloe buried her face in her hands, letting out a stifled sob. Julian glared at the monitor, his knuckles white as he gripped the wooden table.
"As for the allegation of financial dispute," I continued, switching the screen to display the flowcharts generated by our forensic accountants. "We have traced over two point four million dollars stolen from Evelyn Vance to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, managed directly by Julian Vance to cover up his fraudulent Ponzi scheme at Vance Financial Management."
I turned to face Judge Thorne directly. "Your Honor, the State submits that Julian and Chloe Vance represent an extreme flight risk, a danger to the primary witness, and an ongoing threat to society. We request that bail be denied entirely, and that both defendants remain in custody pending trial."
Jonathan Sterling leaped to his feet, his composure completely shattered. "Your Honor! This is outrageous! My clients are citizens with no prior record—"
"Sit down, Mr. Sterling!" Judge Thorne commanded, slamming his gavel down hard.
The judge looked at Julian and Chloe with pure disgust.
"The evidence presented by the State is overwhelming, disturbing, and paints a picture of unfathomable cruelty," Judge Thorne declared. "The defense’s motion to suppress is denied in its entirety. Bail is denied for both defendants. They will remain in maximum-security custody at the County Correctional Facility until trial."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Julian and Chloe back down to the holding cells, Julian finally broke. He lunged across the defense table toward me, his face twisted in psychotic rage.
"You ruined me!" he screamed, his voice echoing off the courtroom walls as three guards tackled him to the floor. "You think you're so righteous, Elena?! You killed this family! You killed it!"
May you like
I stood motionless at the podium, looking down at my brother pinned to the floor by armed guards.
"You killed this family the day you put a rope around our mother's wrists, Julian," I said softly. "I'm just burying the remains."
