Chapter 3 - The Raid

The front door burst open as Captain Reynolds and four uniformed state troopers flooded into the foyer. Tactical flashlights cut through the dim house, their beams sweeping over the pristine decor before locking onto Julian and Chloe.

"Julian Vance! Chloe Vance! Hands where we can see them! Step away from the furniture!" Captain Reynolds commanded, his sidearm holstered but his hand resting firmly on the grip.

"This is a mistake!" Chloe screamed, backing into the corner of the dining room, her pristine diamond jewelry sparkling beneath the harsh tactical lights. "My husband is a respected financial advisor! Our lawyer is—"

"Your lawyer can meet you at the county jail, ma'am," Reynolds interrupted coldly. He gestured to two troopers. "Cuff them."

Julian tried to pull away as a heavy trooper grabbed his arm, forcing his wrists behind his back. "Elena! Tell them to stop! We're family! You're going to ruin my life over the ramblings of a senile old woman?!"

I stepped into the center of the room, standing beside Captain Reynolds. I looked my brother dead in the eyes.

"The 'senile old woman' is currently upstairs under the protection of an emergency judicial order signed by Judge Thorne," I said, pulling the signed paper from my folder and holding it in front of Julian’s face. "This order strips you of all power of attorney, revokes your access to any financial asset belonging to Evelyn Vance, and awards me full temporary guardianship."

"You can't do this!" Julian yelled as the steel cuffs clicked tightly over his wrists. "I own this house!"

"Actually, you don't," Captain Reynolds chimed in, pulling a second document from his jacket. "This is a search and seizure warrant for all electronic devices, financial records, hard drives, and legal documents on these premises. Furthermore, state forensic investigators are en route to turn this house into a crime scene."

A state police van pulled up outside, its rear doors opening to reveal two paramedics carrying a specialized stretcher. I walked them upstairs personally, ensuring my mother was handled with the utmost gentleness.

As they carefully brought my mother down the stairs wrapped in a warm blanket, she looked down into the foyer.

Julian and Chloe were being marched toward the front door in handcuffs. Chloe was weeping hysterically, her designer dress rumpled, while Julian glared up at the ceiling, his jaw clenched in pure rage.

My mother stopped on the stairs, looking down at her son. For the first time in three years, the fear in her eyes vanished, replaced by a quiet, sad dignity.

"Julian," she said softly, her voice echoing through the hallway. "I gave you life. And you treated me like a bank account to be bled dry."

Julian didn't answer. He couldn't. The troopers pushed him out the front door into the flashing red lights and the cold night air, where three local news crews—notified through state press channels—were already filming their perp walk.

Captain Reynolds turned to me as the forensic team began marking the dining room table for evidence. "Assistant Attorney General Vance, we have seized four laptops, two external hard drives, and three filing cabinets from Julian’s home office. Where do you want us to start?"

"Start with the offshore transfers," I said, watching the police cruiser drive away into the night. "And call the State Banking Commission. We're freezing every account tied to Vance Financial Management by dawn."
