Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

With the clock ticking down to Friday’s critical custody hearing, Alexander began a desperate search for evidence.
He started by reviewing the house's external security camera footage. While there were no cameras inside the kids' bedrooms, the driveway camera had recorded Caroline's erratic behavior over the past six months—throwing children's toys into the trash bins in rages, screaming at delivery drivers, and leaving three-year-old Oliver unattended on the front lawn for over an hour while she argued on her phone.
Next, Alexander visited Emma’s elementary school.
He requested a private meeting with Emma’s third-grade teacher, Ms. Albright, and the school guidance counselor, Mr. Davis.
Sitting in the small school office, surrounded by children's artwork, Alexander laid out the reality of the situation.
Ms. Albright sighed deeply, leaning back in her chair with a look of heavy guilt. "Mr. Hale... I have to be honest with you. We have been worried about Emma for a long time."
Alexander’s stomach dropped. "Why didn't anyone call me?"
"We did try," Mr. Davis spoke up, pulling out a student file. "Every time we called the primary household number regarding Emma’s withdrawal, her flinching at sudden noises, or her falling asleep at her desk, Mrs. Hale answered. She told us that Emma was having night terrors and that you were going through a difficult career transition. She specifically asked us not to bother you at work because it caused 'family tension.'"
Ms. Albright added, "Two months ago, Emma came to school with a dark bruise on her wrist. When I asked her about it, she burst into tears and said she fell off her bike. But when I checked with Mrs. Hale, she got extremely defensive and threatened to pull Emma out of the school and sue the district for defamation."
Alexander put his head in his hands. Caroline had constructed an impenetrable wall around her abuse, using his absence as cover and threatening anyone who tried to look over the fence.
"Ms. Albright, Mr. Davis," Alexander said, raising his head, his eyes burning with intense resolve. "I am fighting for emergency sole custody in court this Friday. Will you testify? Will you submit official school records documenting her behavior and Mrs. Hale’s threats?"
Ms. Albright looked at Mr. Davis, then back at Alexander. She reached across the desk and gently touched his arm.
"Mr. Hale, we love Emma. She is a sweet, brilliant little girl who has been carrying an impossible burden. We will submit full affidavits by tomorrow morning."
Leaving the school with a small spark of hope, Alexander received a text from Victoria Reed:
‘Alex, I found something big. Come to my office now.’
When Alexander arrived, Victoria handed him a thick blue binder.
"My private investigator dug into Caroline’s past before you met her," Victoria explained. "It turns out you weren't her first victim, Alex."
Alexander scanned the pages. His jaw tightened.
Eighteen years ago, before meeting Alexander, Caroline had been enrolled in a prestigious master's program at an Ivy League university. She had been quietly dismissed from the program after a junior roommate filed a formal restraining order against her for physical assault and psychological harassment. The case had been settled out of court with a non-disclosure agreement funded by Evelyn's wealthy family trust.
"She has a documented history of severe personality disorders and explosive aggression when she feels a loss of control," Victoria said cleanly. "Her mother covered it up eighteen years ago, and she tried to cover it up again with your children."

Alexander closed the binder with a heavy thud.
"This ends Friday," he said.
