Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirror

Caroline stood in the center of the children's bedroom, her silhouette illuminated by the harsh overhead light. In her right hand, she held a heavy wooden decorative brush, her knuckles white, her shoulders heaving with a erratic, breathless rhythm. Her hair, usually styled into immaculate waves that fit her image as a pristine suburban mother, was frayed and disheveled. Her eyes—normally cool, calculating, and composed—were wide, bloodshot, and glossy with an unhinged, wild intensity that Alexander had never seen in their ten years of marriage.
"Caroline?" Alexander's voice came out as a hoarse whisper, scraping against the dry walls of his throat.
Caroline whipped around, her body tensing as if she had been caught committing a crime. For a fraction of a second, panic flashed across her features, but it was almost instantly replaced by a cold, venomous mask of defensive outrage.
"Alexander," she breathed out, her voice dangerously thin. "You're late. As usual. You left me alone with them all day."
"Dad..."
The small, broken sound came from the corner. Alexander’s eyes shifted away from his wife and landed on his eight-year-old daughter, Emma. She was huddled on the floor, squeezed between the bookshelf and the small white wardrobe. In her lap, she cradled three-year-old Oliver, whose small face was buried frantically into the crook of her neck, his body trembling violently. A dark stain of spilled milk covered the rug beside them, along with shattered glass from a broken nursing bottle.
"Dad… please don’t let this happen again…" Emma whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of a terror no child should ever carry. She wasn't just crying; she was guarding her baby brother with her life.
Alexander felt something violently rip open inside his chest. The years of long work hours, the corporate travel, the comfortable excuses he had made for Caroline’s icy demeanor, the quiet warnings from schoolteachers he had brushed off as "over-sensitivity"—it all crashed over him in a sickening, suffocating wave.
He took a step toward the corner. "Emma... Oliver..."
"Don't you dare touch them!" Caroline snapped, stepping directly into his path, raising her hand. "They disobedient little brats! Oliver spilled his milk on purpose after I told him three times to sit still! And Emma—Emma talked back to me! She tried to hide him from me! I am their mother, Alexander! I am trying to discipline them, but you—you ruin everything by coming home and playing the savior!"
Alexander looked at his wife's hand. The wooden brush was raised, her fingers twitching.
"Lower your hand, Caroline," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet, absolute steel that he had never used with her before.
"Don't speak to me like that in my own house!" she yelled, her voice screeching into an uncomfortable register. "You think you can just march in here after working fourteen hours a day at your precious firm and tell me how to run this house?! You gave me these children! You left me here to rot in this suburban prison while you built your empire!"
"I said," Alexander stepped forward, using his stature to completely block her line of sight to the children, "lower your hand."
Caroline glared at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. For a moment, it looked as though she might strike him. But as she met Alexander’s eyes—eyes devoid of the easygoing, conflict-averse compliance he had displayed for years—she flinched. She slowly lowered the brush, tossing it onto the bed with a forced laugh.
"You're hysterical," Caroline muttered, crossing her arms defensively. "You're making a scene over spilled milk. Look at you, dramatic as always. I was just giving them a time-out."
Alexander ignored her. He dropped to his knees in front of Emma and Oliver, carefully stepping over the broken glass on the rug. He reached out slowly, keeping his movements predictable and gentle.
"Emma, sweetheart," Alexander whispered, his eyes stinging with unbidden tears. "I'm here. Dad is right here."
Emma looked at him, her tear-streaked face pale. She didn't let go of Oliver immediately. She searched her father's face, looking for the passive man who usually patted her head and stepped out for another business call. But seeing the raw, protective agony in his eyes, her small defense mechanism collapsed. She leaned forward, burying her face into his chest, her small arms wrapping around his neck while Oliver whimpered, clinging to his father's shirt.
"I've got you," Alexander murmured, pulling both of his children into a tight, protective embrace, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces as he felt how thin and terrified Emma felt in his arms. "I've got you both. I am never leaving you alone again. I promise you. I promise."

Behind him, Caroline let out a harsh, contemptuous scoff. "Oh, brilliant. Give them a reward for misbehaving. You're a pathetic father, Alexander. Absolutely pathetic."
Alexander didn't look back at her. He lifted both children into his arms, carrying them out of the room, leaving Caroline standing alone amidst the spilled milk and broken glass.
