Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Caroline Hale did not go quietly into the night.

By Monday morning, Alexander discovered the full extent of his wife's malice. When he logged onto his personal banking app to check his accounts, he found his main checking and savings accounts frozen.

Caroline had filed an emergency petition for divorce and spousal support in county court, alleging that Alexander had suffered a severe mental breakdown, had become physically aggressive toward her, and had locked her out of the family home while holding their children hostage.

Attached to the court filing was a sworn affidavit from Caroline’s mother, Evelyn, claiming that Alexander had a long history of emotional instability and work-related violence.

"She's playing dirty, Alex," said Victoria Reed, a top-tier family law attorney whom Sarah had recommended to Alexander. They were sitting in Victoria’s downtown office.

Victoria tossed the court documents onto her glass desk. "Caroline is trying to set the narrative first. In custody battles, the person who files the first emergency order often gets the temporary upper hand. She’s framing you as an absent, abusive workaholic father who snapped."

Alexander felt a pulse of white-hot anger throbbing in his temple. "She raised a weapon at my children, Victoria! She has been abusing them emotionally and physically while I was at work!"

"I believe you, Alex," Victoria said calmly. "But courtrooms run on evidence, not righteous anger. Do you have video recordings of last night?"

"No," Alexander admitted, his chest tightening. "We didn't have cameras inside the children's bedrooms."

"Do you have police reports from prior incidents?"

"No. I... I didn't realize what was happening until last night."

Victoria sighed softly, leaning forward. "Then right now, it's your word against hers, supported by her mother's testimony. The emergency temporary custody hearing is set for Friday. If we go into that courtroom without concrete evidence or third-party witnesses, the judge might grant her temporary custody and issue a restraining order against you."

Alexander slammed his fist onto the armrest. "I will not let her near my children again! I would rather burn my life to the ground!"

"Then we need to dig," Victoria said sharply. "We need medical records, witness statements, school records—anything that shows a pattern of Caroline’s behavior. And we need a forensic child psychologist to interview Emma immediately."

That evening, Alexander returned home to find a process server waiting at his front gate. He was formally served with a temporary restraining order and a summons to court.

As Alexander walked up the driveway, holding the legal papers in his hand, a sleek black sedan pulled up across the street.

The window rolled down.

Caroline’s mother, Evelyn, sat in the passenger seat, looking at Alexander with a smug, cold smile. Beside her in the driver's seat was Caroline, wearing oversized sunglasses, looking sleek and triumphant.

Caroline leaned across the console, looking out the window at Alexander.

"Enjoy your week with them, Alex," Caroline called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Because by Friday afternoon, the court is handing my children back to me. And you'll be paying for every single cent of my legal fees."

Alexander stood his ground, staring at them with cold, unwavering eyes. He didn't yell. He didn't argue.

"You lost them the moment you made them cry, Caroline," Alexander said softly, yet clearly enough for the wind to carry his words across the street. "And you are never getting them back."
