Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Truth

The morning light broke softly over the suburban neighborhood, but inside the Hale household, there was no peace.
Alexander woke up at dawn on the sofa outside the guest room. The moment he opened his eyes, the crushing reality of his life settled onto his chest. He stood up, unlocked the guest room door, and stepped inside.
Emma was already awake, sitting quietly on the edge of the bed, holding Oliver’s hand as the toddler slept. She looked up at her father with cautious, watchful eyes.
"Dad?" she whispered timidly. "Is... is Mommy here?"
Alexander walked over, sitting beside her, and gently pulled her into his arms. "No, sweetheart. Mommy is not here. She won't be here today, or tomorrow. It's just us."
He felt a massive sigh of relief escape Emma’s small body. She leaned her head against his shoulder, letting her posture relax for the first time in memory.
"Dad," Emma whispered, her fingers nervously picking at the hem of her blanket. "Are you mad at me?"
"Mad at you?" Alexander’s heart shattered again. "Emma, why would I ever be mad at you?"
"Because... Mommy said if I told you about the punishments, you would leave us," Emma sobbed quietly, tears leaking from her eyes. "She said you didn't like noisy kids, and if I complained, you would get a divorce and leave me and Oliver alone with her forever. So I tried to be good. I tried to keep Oliver quiet..."
Alexander squeezed his eyes shut, fighting back a wave of violent rage toward Caroline. Emotional hostage-taking. She had systematically conditioned their eight-year-old daughter into keeping silent through psychological torture.
"Listen to me, Emma," Alexander said, holding her by her shoulders so she had to look directly into his eyes. "Mommy was lying to you. Nothing you or Oliver did was wrong. You are the bravest, sweetest girl in the world for protecting your brother. I am never, ever going to leave you. Do you hear me? I will spend every second of my life protecting you."
After making the children a gentle breakfast of pancakes and hot cocoa, Alexander placed a call to his elder sister, Sarah, a pediatrician who lived two towns over.
Within an hour, Sarah arrived at the house. The moment she walked through the door and saw the tense, quiet atmosphere, her professional instincts kicked in. She examined Oliver and Emma, checking for physical signs of harm.
While Oliver only had minor bruises on his arms from harsh handling, Sarah pulled Alexander aside into the study, her face grave.
"Alex," Sarah said in a quiet, urgent whisper. "Emma has defense bruises on her forearms. They're old, Alex. Some are weeks old. This isn't something that started last night."
Alexander sank into his office chair, pressing his palms against his temples. "I didn't see them, Sarah. How could I not see them?"
"Because Caroline made sure you didn't," Sarah said softly, placing a comforting hand on her brother's shoulder. "Caroline curated an image. She dressed them in long sleeves, kept them busy with extracurriculars, and managed your schedule so you were always working. But Alex, you have to act now. You cannot let this slide. You need a lawyer, a child therapist, and a protective order immediately."
Before Alexander could reply, his phone rang on the desk.
The caller ID showed his law firm's Managing Partner, Marcus Vance.
Alexander answered, placing it on speaker. "Marcus—"
"Alex! Where the hell are you?!" Marcus’s voice roared through the speaker. "The Henderson merger closing is in two hours! The client is in the board room asking for you!"
Alexander looked out the study door. He could see Emma sitting on the rug in the living room, carefully teaching Oliver how to stack wooden blocks, her eyes still darting nervously toward the front door every time the house creaked.
"I'm not coming in, Marcus," Alexander said flatly.
"What do you mean you're not coming in?!" Marcus barked. "This is a twenty-million-dollar deal! You're next in line for Senior Partner! If you walk away from this closing, the board will bypass you!"
"Then bypass me," Alexander said cleanly. "I am taking an indefinite leave of absence, starting right now."

"Alex, are you insane?! What could possibly be more important than this closing?!"
Alexander looked at his children. "My life," he said, and hung up the phone.
