Chapter 5 - The Public Execution

The headquarters of Carter Enterprises was usually a sanctuary of high finance and corporate prestige. But on Monday morning, it became a battleground.

When Mark arrived at the corporate building, he was greeted not by his executive board, but by a swarm of news reporters and camera crews assembled on the front steps. Microphones were thrust into his face the moment he stepped out of his car.

"Mr. Carter! Is it true you abandoned your wife during an emergency triple birth?"

"Mr. Carter! How do you respond to allegations of corporate embezzlement to fund your mistress?"

"Has the board asked for your resignation, Mr. Carter?"

Mark pushed through the crowd, shielding his face, his heart pounding in his chest. He burst into the lobby, only to find two uniformed state marshals waiting by the elevators alongside Richard Vance and the Chairman of the Board, Arthur Sterling.

"Mark," Arthur said coldly, not offering his hand. "Step into the conference room."

Inside the grand glass conference room, the entire board of directors sat in silence. Projected onto the wall was not a quarterly financial report, but a leaked news article from the State Gazette, complete with photos of Mark cutting the cake with Madison beside a timeline of Emily’s emergency surgery vitals.

"This is a nightmare, Mark," Arthur said, slamming his hand on the table. "Our stock has dropped fourteen percent in morning trading. Our primary investors are pulling out of the expansion project. The public perception of this company is radioactive."

"Arthur, please," Mark pleaded, stepping toward the table. "This is a private marital dispute. It has nothing to do with my performance as CEO—"

"A private dispute?" Arthur interrupted, his voice booming. "You used corporate credit lines to guarantee loans for Madison Vale’s business! You authorized wire transfers from joint corporate reserves without board approval! That isn't a private dispute, Mark. That is a breach of fiduciary duty."

"I can cover the funds!" Mark said desperately. "I’ll sell my personal stock shares—"

"Your personal stock shares have been frozen by the family court pending the divorce settlement," Richard Vance chimed in softly, looking down at his desk. "I told you, Mark. Evelyn Vance doesn't leave loose ends."

Arthur stood up, pulling a leather folder from his jacket. "Mark Carter, by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors, your executive powers as Chief Executive Officer are suspended immediately. You are barred from entering these premises, and an independent special prosecutor has been appointed to review your financial transactions."

Mark felt the ground beneath his feet give way. In less than seven days, he had lost his home, his children, his reputation, and now, the multi-million-dollar empire he had spent a decade building.

"Arthur... please," Mark whispered, his voice cracking. "I built this company."

May you like

"And you destroyed it in forty minutes," Arthur replied without mercy. "Security will escort you from the building."

Mark walked out of the glass tower into the bright afternoon sun, completely stripped of power. He stood on the pavement, the cameras flashing, the reporters shouting, but all he could hear in his head was the echoing sound of three tiny heartbeats flashing across a hospital monitor that he had chosen not to see.
