Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Chalice

While Emily built her new reality in the quiet woods of Vermont, Mark’s world was crumbling at blinding speed.

The glass doors of the grand country club swung open, and Mark marched into the private dining room where Madison Vale was directing a team of decorators. Madison was dressed in an expensive silk blouse, holding a glass of champagne, looking every bit the high-society businesswoman she had always dreamed of becoming.

"Mark!" Madison smiled brightly, stepping forward to wrap her arms around his neck. "I was wondering when you’d call! The interior design showcase was such a success! The local paper wants to do a feature on—"

Mark grabbed her wrist and pulled her arms away, his face pale, his eyes bloodshot. "Did you know?"

Madison blinked, her smile fading into a look of delicate confusion. "Mark? What are you talking about? You're hurting my wrist."

"Did you know Emily was in labor when you asked me to turn off my phone?!" Mark shouted, his voice echoing across the empty ballroom, causing two decorators to freeze in their tracks.

"Mark, lower your voice!" Madison hissed, her delicate demeanor instantly dropping into something sharper. "What is wrong with you? Why would I know about your wife’s medical business?"

"Because my office manager called your personal cell fifteen minutes before we cut that damn cake!" Mark yelled, pulling out his phone and thrusting the logged calls into her face. "My assistant tried to reach me through your line when my phone didn't answer! She told you Emily was hemorrhaging at Saint Jude’s! She told you they were rushing her into an emergency C-section!"

Madison’s eyes flickered with a brief, cold flash of guilt before she quickly straightened her shoulders and smoothed her silk shirt.

"She was always complaining, Mark," Madison said casually, stepping back and picking up her champagne glass. "Every week it was something new with her. 'Oh, my back hurts, Oh, I'm having mild cramps.' She was using those babies to keep you on a leash! She knew today was my big launch! She knew how important this was for me!"

Mark stared at her, feeling a sick, heavy nausea rise in his throat. It felt as if a blindfold had been violently ripped from his eyes, revealing the grotesque truth beneath a face he had idolized for over fifteen years.

"She wasn't faking, Madison," Mark whispered, his voice trembling with horror. "She lost two liters of blood. She signed surgery forms while her heart was stopping. She delivered three baby girls while I was standing next to you, holding a cake knife."

Madison rolled her eyes. "Well, she’s fine now, isn't she? Women have C-sections every day, Mark. Stop being so dramatic. Besides, you're here now. You're free from her."

"Free from her?" Mark laughed, a bitter, broken sound. "She filed for divorce. She took my children. She got an emergency restraining order. And her lawyer just froze every business account associated with Vale Designs."

Madison’s face turned instantly white. The champagne glass trembled in her hand. "What? What do you mean froze my accounts? That's my company!"

"That company was funded with my marital assets, Madison!" Mark roared. "My wife’s money! The money that was supposed to pay for my daughters' futures! The forensic auditors are coming for everything. They are seizing your inventory, your studio lease, and your personal bank accounts!"

"You can't let them do that!" Madison screamed, dropping her delicate act entirely, her face contorting in rage. "You promised to take care of me! You said you loved me! You told me Emily was just a comfortable mistake you made while I was living in New York!"

Mark took a step back, looking at Madison as if she were a dangerous stranger. "A comfortable mistake? Emily was my wife. She gave me six years of her life. She carried three children at once while I ignored her to fix your financial messes. And you... you knew she was dying, and you handed me that knife."

"Mark, wait!" Madison reached for his arm, but Mark snatched his coat away.

"Don't touch me," Mark said, his voice flat, dead, devoid of any feeling. "I lost my family for a ghost. And now, Madison... you're on your own."
