Chapter 2 - The Audit of Betrayal

The legal petition lay on the polished mahogany desk of Carter Enterprises, but Mark wasn't looking at the legal jargon. He was staring at his lawyer, Richard Vance, who looked thoroughly exhausted and thoroughly unimpressed.

"She stripped the house, Richard," Mark paced back and forth across his executive office, his hair unkempt, his suit rumpled. It had been forty-eight hours since he found the empty house, and he hadn't slept a wink. "She took everything! She erased six years of marriage in four days! You need to file an emergency motion for visitation. She can't keep my children from me!"

Richard leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms. "Mark, sit down."

"I won't sit down! I am the father!"

"You are a father who turned his phone off during a life-threatening triple-birth emergency to attend an anniversary party with your ex-girlfriend at an exclusive country club," Richard said flatly, his tone cutting through Mark’s hysteria like a scalpel. "Do you have any idea how that looks in a family court room?"

"It wasn't an anniversary party! It was a business celebration! Madison was launching her interior design firm!" Mark yelled defensively. "I was only gone for a few hours!"

"A few hours during which your wife went into hypovolemic shock," Richard countered, reading from a file folder on his lap. "According to the hospital records subpoenaed by Emily's attorney, Emily underwent an emergency classical C-section under general anesthesia. Baby C had a cord prolapse. Baby B was hypoxic. Emily lost nearly two liters of blood. She signed her own consent forms while her blood pressure was crashing to sixty over forty. The hospital social worker tried contacting you seven times. The police department was called to track your vehicle, but because your phone was off, they couldn't locate you."

Mark stopped pacing. The color drained completely from his face. "She... she lost two liters of blood?"

"She almost died on that table, Mark," Richard said quietly. "And while she was in the ICU recovering, her sister brought a family court judge to her bedside. The judge reviewed the hospital logs, the phone records, and the surveillance footage from the country club—which, by the way, Emily’s team already obtained. The footage shows you holding hands with Madison Vale and cutting a rose-decorated cake at the exact minute Dr. Patel was making the incision on your wife's abdomen."

Mark collapsed into the chair opposite his lawyer, burying his face in his hands. A violent tremor ran through his shoulders. "I didn't know... I thought she was just having false contractions again. She had Braxton Hicks last week... I thought she was just panicking..."

"It doesn't matter what you thought," Richard said, showing no sympathy. "What matters is that Emily’s legal representation is led by Evelyn Vance—my ex-wife, who happens to be the most ruthless high-conflict divorce attorney in the state. They aren't just suing for divorce, Mark. They are filing for a complete financial audit of your personal and corporate accounts."

Mark looked up, horror flashing in his eyes. "What? Why corporate accounts?"

"Because," Richard said, throwing a document across the desk, "Emily discovered that over the past fourteen months, you diverted nearly eight hundred thousand dollars from your joint investment accounts into a shell corporation registered under the name Vale Designs. You funded Madison's new company using your marital assets, Mark. You paid her rent, her payroll, and her country club membership."

"It was an investment!" Mark protested weakly. "Madison was struggling! She came back to town with nothing after her divorce!"

"And your wife was carrying triplets while you played savior to your college sweetheart," Richard said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "I’ll file a response to the restraining order, Mark. But I’m going to be honest with you: as far as the court is concerned, you aren't just an unfaithful husband. You are an abandoned father who endangered his children before they took their first breaths. Prepare yourself. This isn't going to be a divorce. This is going to be an execution."
