Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege

By Monday morning, the corporate empire of Blake Systems struck back with terrifying velocity. Elena’s phone was flooded with legal alerts. Christopher had filed an emergency injunction in the Cook County Chancery Court, alleging that Elena Rivera had committed corporate espionage, breached her pre-wedding financial agreements, and stolen proprietary code belonging to Blake Systems during her abrupt departure from the hotel.
Worse, Christopher’s PR machine had already leaked a carefully spun narrative to the tech press. The headlines were brutal: Struggling Founder Deserts Billionaire Fiance at Altar After Tech Fraud Exposed.
Elena sat in Rachel’s studio, watching a prominent tech analyst on TV discuss her algorithm as if it were stolen property.
"He’s trying to freeze me out of the market," Elena said, her eyes bloodshot from a night of coding. "No venture capital firm will touch me with a pending trade secret lawsuit over my head. Without an infusion of capital, Taylor Guard’s cloud hosting fees will expire in thirty days, and the system will go dark."
The door to the studio opened, and James Harrison stepped inside. Rachel immediately stood up, grabbing a metal T-square from her drafting table like a weapon. "Who let you in here?"
"I followed Gabrielle," James said, raising his hands in surrender. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, the pristine image of Christopher’s best man completely gone. "Elena, I’m not here for Christopher. I’m here because I can't let him do this again."
Margaret Chen eyed him suspiciously. "You stood by while he destroyed three other women, Mr. Harrison. Why change your mind now?"
"Because of the kids," James said quietly, looking toward the corner where Mia and Noah were drawing. "Christopher’s previous targets were independent women. It was cruel, but it was just business. But watching him plan to strip a mother of her livelihood, knowing she has three kids to support... it crossed a line. Christopher didn't just file a corporate lawsuit this morning, Elena."
Elena’s heart stopped. "What did he do?"
"He filed a petition with the Department of Children and Family Services," James revealed, his voice shaking. "He’s using his political influence to claim that your unstable financial situation, combined with the corporate fraud allegations, makes you an unfit parent. He’s aiming for a temporary custody extraction to break your psychological resolve."
Elena stood up so fast her chair clattered to the floor. The fear that had haunted her for six years—the fear of losing her children to the system because she couldn't afford rent—surged back with venomous intensity.
"He won't touch them," Elena whispered, her voice dead and cold.
"He has a judge on his payroll, Elena," James warned. "Judge Bradley. He handles all of Blake Systems' fast-track corporate injunctions. If Bradley signs the order this afternoon, social workers will show up here with police escorts."
Margaret Chen stood up, her gray eyes flashing with academic authority. "Not if we move the venue to a federal court. Mr. Harrison, does Christopher’s digital infrastructure cross state lines?"
May you like
Gabrielle answered from her laptop. "Yes. The servers Christopher used to access Elena’s beta code are hosted in Northern Virginia. And the shell companies he used to funnel the acquisition money are registered in Delaware."
"Then this isn't a local trade dispute," Margaret said, a sharp smile appearing on her face. "This is interstate wire fraud and corporate extortion. We don't go to Judge Bradley. We go straight to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois."
