Chapter 2 - The Altar of Deceit

The heavy double doors of the Grand Palmer Hotel’s grand ballroom burst open with a resounding echo that shattered the practiced serenity of the ceremony. The string quartet, mid-crescendo through a classical bridal march, faltered into a discordant scratch of bows. Six hundred guests—a sea of Chicago’s elite, venture capitalists, and tech moguls—turned in unison.

Down the long, white silk-lined aisle ran Mia, Miles, and Noah. Their matching wedding outfits, once pristine, were disheveled. Noah’s small bow tie hung askew, and Miles was clutching his tablet to his chest like a shield. Behind them, two burly men from Christopher’s private security detail appeared in the doorway, flushed and hesitating, unsure how to handle three children in front of a crowd of high-society onlookers.

Elena stood at the altar, her breath catching in her throat. Christopher stood beside her, the picture of aristocratic composure, though the muscle in his jaw twitched once.

"Mom!" Mia’s voice rang through the vaulted ceiling, sharp and desperate, stripping away the carefully curated dignity of the room. "Stop! You can't marry him!"

Elena stepped forward, her expensive veil shifting, ignoring the collective gasp that rippled through the pews. "Mia? Miles? What’s wrong? What happened?"

Christopher quickly stepped into her path, his large hand coming down on Elena’s shoulder. His grip was firm—a fraction too firm—designed to anchor her in place while maintaining his camera-ready smile for the photographers. "Elena, darling, it’s alright. The children are just overwhelmed by the scale of the event. James, get security to escort them back to the suite."

James Harrison, standing as best man, stepped down from the altar platform, his expression conflicted but his loyalty to Christopher driving his feet forward. "Come on, kids. Let’s go back upstairs. Your mom will be down in a minute."

"No!" Miles shouted, dodging James with the agility of a child who spent his afternoons navigating crowded playgrounds. He sprinted the remaining yards to the altar, thrusting the tablet directly into Elena’s hands. "Listen to it, Mom! We recorded him! He called us baggage! He’s going to steal Taylor Guard!"

The word Taylor Guard echoed through the front rows of the congregation, where Christopher’s primary investors sat. Christopher’s smile finally vanished, replaced by a cold, authoritarian mask.

"Elena, give me the device," Christopher whispered, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register that only she could hear. "We have six hundred people watching. Do not make a scene over a child’s fantasy."

But Elena wasn't listening to him anymore. Her fingers, which had coded the very security algorithms Christopher wanted to buy, pressed the play button on the tablet’s screen. Miles had bypassed the hotel's secure audio network using a simple Bluetooth sniffer, capturing a conversation from the groom's lounge just twenty minutes prior.

Christopher’s own voice, crisp and unambiguous, poured from the small speakers: "...Within six months, ownership transfers gradually to Blake Systems. When the patents are secured, I file for divorce... Necessary for the image now. Unnecessary for the future."

The ballroom fell into a terrifying, absolute silence.

Elena felt the blood drain from her face. The articles Dr. Margaret Chen had given her weren't just a warning; they were a blueprint. Christopher hadn't fallen in love with her. He hadn't fallen in love with her children. He had targeted her with the precision of a corporate raider looking for an undervalued asset.

Christopher reached out to snatch the tablet, but Elena took a sharp step back, pulling her shoulder out from under his hand. The illusion was gone. The diamonds around her neck suddenly felt like a leash.

"Elena," Christopher said, his voice instantly shifting back to a tone of calm, reasonable concern for the audience’s sake. "The audio is a deepfake. A malicious digital manipulation. Your competitors are trying to sabotage our union. Let’s finish the vows, and my legal team will handle this by tomorrow morning."

Elena looked at him, really looked at him, seeing past the tailored tuxedo and the billionaire charm to the cold predator beneath. She looked down at her three children, who stood before her with fierce, protective loyalty, ready to fight the world for her.

"It’s not a fake, Christopher," Elena said, her voice surprisingly steady, carrying through the microphone attached to her lapel. "You didn't want a wife. You wanted a patent. And you thought because I was a struggling mother, I would be too desperate for safety to notice the trap."

She reached up, unpinned the diamond veil from her hair, and let it drop to the floor.

"The wedding is over," Elena said.

She grabbed Mia and Noah by their hands, while Miles clung to her dress. Together, they turned their backs on Christopher Blake and walked down the long white aisle, leaving the billionaire groom standing alone at his own perfect altar.
