Chapter 8 - The Desperate Trap

Deprived of his final legal gamble, Evan’s mind devolved into total, unhinged desperation.

Late that evening, inside the dingy room at the Sunline Motel, Gloria was screaming at him, throwing her plastic coffee cup against the wall. "You idiot! Your lawyer failed! They're going to put us in prison! Do something!"

"Shut up, Mom!" Evan roared, his eyes wild, his hair unkempt. "Just shut up!"

He grabbed his coat from the back of the chair.

"Where are you going?!" Gloria demanded.

"I'm going to finish this," Evan spat through clenched teeth. "If Margaret wants to play dirty, then I'll play dirty."

"Evan, don't do anything stupid!" Gloria warned, a rare moment of genuine fear striking her heart. "They have guards!"

"They have guards at the estate and at the corporate office," Evan whispered, a dark, twisted smile creeping onto his face. "But they don't have guards everywhere."

An hour later, rain began to pour over the town of Oakridge.

At 8:30 PM, Emily was driving home from the corporate office in a secure company SUV provided by our private security detail. I was still at the office finalizing the board documents with Daniel, while Emily had left early to relieve the nanny and put little Lily to bed.

Her driver, an experienced security officer named Marcus, drove carefully down the winding, rain-slicked country road leading toward our estate.

"Heavy rain tonight, Miss Hartwell," Marcus remarked, looking through the rearview mirror. "We'll be at the main gate in about five minutes."

"Thank you, Marcus," Emily said, looking at her phone, checking the nursery camera feed to see little Lily sleeping peacefully in her crib under the watchful eye of Clara.

Suddenly, a loud BANG echoed from the front left wheel of the SUV. The heavy vehicle lurched violent to the left, the steering wheel shuddering in Marcus’s hands.

"Spike strip!" Marcus shouted, wrestling with the wheel as the vehicle slid off the rain-soaked asphalt and came to a sharp, jarring halt on the muddy shoulder of the road.

"Marcus! What happened?!" Emily cried out, gripping her seatbelt as the engine died.

"Stay inside, Miss Hartwell! Lock the doors!" Marcus ordered, pulling his sidearm from his shoulder holster. "Someone laid a tire trap on the road!"

Before Marcus could open his door, a heavy iron crowbar smashed through the driver's side window. Glass shattered into thousands of dangerous shards.

Marcus roared in pain as a hand reached through the broken glass, spraying a heavy mist of pepper spray directly into his eyes. Disoriented and blinded, Marcus dropped his weapon, coughing violently.

The driver’s side door was yanked open, and a figure wearing a dark raincoat dragged the blinded security officer out into the mud.

Emily gasped in sheer terror, scrambling toward the passenger side door, but before she could lock it, the door was pulled open from the outside.

A wet, wild-eyed face appeared in the doorway, illuminated by the flashing hazard lights.

It was Evan.

"Hello, sweetheart," Evan sneered, his voice raspy and insane. He lunged into the vehicle, grabbing Emily by her jacket collar. "Did you really think you could take everything from me and just walk away?!"

"Get your hands off me!" Emily screamed, kicking out with all her strength. Her high heel struck Evan hard in the shin.

Evan grunted in pain, his grip slipping for a fraction of a second, but his madness gave him unnatural strength. He grabbed her wrists, twisting them painfully behind her back, pinning her against the leather seats.

"Shut up!" he screamed into her face, his breath smelling of stale alcohol and rain. "You're coming with me! We're going to call your mother right now, and she's going to sign over the Cayman accounts, or you're never seeing your baby again!"

Emily stopped struggling for a single second. She looked into his wild, desperate eyes, feeling the cold rain dripping from his coat onto her face.

The fear that had plagued her for two years suddenly vanished, replaced by a pure, blinding, maternal fury.

May you like

"You will never touch my daughter again, Evan," she hissed through her teeth.

With a sudden, violent surge of strength, Emily slammed her forehead forward, striking Evan directly in the bridge of his nose.
