Chapter 5 - Desperate Measures

While the foundation of Evan’s professional life was being systematically dismantled, he and his mother were sitting in a cramped, fluorescent-lit room at the Sunline Motel on the edge of town.

The room smelled of stale tobacco and cheap disinfectant. Gloria sat on the edge of the sagging queen-sized bed, her silk blouse wrinkled, her hair messy, staring in sheer disbelief at the small plastic cup of instant coffee in her hands.

"This is unacceptable, Evan!" Gloria shrieked for the hundredth time that morning. "The water in the shower was barely warm! The towels are rough as sandpaper! Call your uncle Marcus right now and tell him to wire us money!"

Evan sat at the small laminate desk, his head buried in his hands. His eyes were bloodshot, his designer suit rumpled from sleeping in a chair. "I've called Marcus six times, Mom! He isn't answering! His secretary said he was in an emergency board meeting!"

"Well, call the bank! Tell them there’s been a mistake!"

"The bank frozen everything, Mom!" Evan slammed his hand against the desk, making the plastic coffee cup rattle. "My credit cards, my savings, the offshore account access—all of it is flagged under a federal trust hold! Margaret filed an emergency fraud injunction! I can't touch a single dollar!"

Gloria’s face turned pale. "What about the house? Can we go back and get my jewelry? My fur coats are in the master closet!"

"There are armed security guards surrounding the gate, Mom! If I step onto that property, they'll arrest me for trespassing!" Evan pulled at his hair, his voice rising into a panicked whine. "We have eighty-four dollars in cash between the two of us. Eighty-four dollars!"

Gloria sank back against the headboard, looking like a woman whose entire world had been erased overnight. "That evil old witch... she planned this. She knew exactly what she was doing."

"No," Evan said, his eyes narrowing as a dark, desperate thought took root in his mind. "It wasn't just Margaret. Emily was in on it too. She was acting weak, letting me think I had control, while her mother set the trap."

"That pathetic girl couldn't organize a grocery list without crying," Gloria spat disdainfully. "She's weak, Evan."

"She isn't weak anymore," Evan muttered, remembering the cold, steady way Emily had looked at him before stepping out the front door into her mother's car. "She looked at me like I was nothing."

His phone suddenly buzzed on the desk. Evan snatched it up instantly, hoping it was Marcus or his attorney.

It was a text message from a process server.

An attachment opened on his screen: a digital copy of an Emergency Restraining Order and a formal Petition for Absolute Divorce, demanding full legal and physical custody of Lily, zero spousal support, and complete forfeiture of all marital claims to the Hartwell Estate assets based on fraud and physical abuse.

"She's divorcing me," Evan whispered, staring at the document.

"Divorcing you?!" Gloria jumped up, snatching the phone from his hand. "She can't do that! You're entitled to half of her trust! That's the law!"

"Not if she proves fraud and abuse, Mom!" Evan yelled, his self-control completely snapping. "If those charges stick, I don't just lose the money—I go to federal prison!"

He stood up, pacing back and forth across the small, dingy room like a caged animal. The reality of his situation was finally crashing down on him. Without the Hartwell money, without the corporate prestige, without the leverage he held over Emily, he was nothing. He had no savings, no career prospects, and a criminal investigation closing in on him.

"We need a lawyer," Gloria said, her voice shaking. "A cheap one. Someone who can negotiate a settlement."

"No lawyer is going to fight Margaret Hartwell for free," Evan spat. "We need leverage. We need something that forces Margaret to drop the charges and unlock the money."

Gloria looked at him, her eyes narrowing. "What kind of leverage?"

Evan looked out the dingy window of the motel room toward the city skyline in the distance. A dark, dangerous madness flickered in his eyes.

"Emily loves that baby more than her own life," Evan whispered, his voice dropping into a chilling, desperate murmur. "And as long as I'm still legally her father... I have rights to see my daughter."
