Chapter 7 - The Final Offer

Five minutes later, a slick, cheap-looking defense attorney in a shiny gray suit stepped into Emily's office. He carried a battered leather briefcase and had the anxious, sweaty demeanor of a man who knew he was out of his depth.

"Miss Hartwell," the attorney said, trying to project authority. "My name is Arthur Pendelton. I represent your husband, Evan Vance."

"My client's name is Emily Hartwell," Daniel Cho corrected him coldly, stepping out from the side room. "And you will address her as such, Mr. Pendelton."

Pendelton winced slightly upon seeing Daniel Cho, recognizing the formidable reputation of the chief attorney for the Hartwell Estate. He cleared his throat, sitting on the edge of the chair across from Emily's desk.

"Look," Pendelton began, shuffling a stack of papers. "My client recognizes that mistakes were made on both sides of this marriage—"

"Mistakes on both sides?" I interrupted, my voice dropping into a register of dangerous stillness. "He physically assaulted my daughter, stole $1.4 million from her trust, and left her with a crying infant while his mother drank my wine."

"Allegations, Mrs. Hartwell," Pendelton argued nervously. "Unproven allegations. My client is prepared to make this quiet. He doesn't want to destroy the family reputation in a public court battle."

Emily leaned forward, resting her elbows on her desk, her gaze piercing right through the defense lawyer. "What is his proposal, Mr. Pendelton?"

Pendelton cleared his throat again, adjusting his tie. "Evan will agree to an uncontested, fast-track divorce. He will sign away all claims to the Hartwell Family Trust, the residential property, and the corporate shares."

"In exchange for what?" Emily asked flatly.

"In exchange," Pendelton said, trying to sound confident, "the Hartwell Estate will immediately withdraw all criminal charges regarding the alleged wire transfers. You will release $2 million from the corporate reserve into a private settlement account for Evan, grant him joint legal custody of little Lily with weekend visitation rights, and provide a monthly alimony payment of $15,000 to his mother, Gloria Vance."

The room went dead silent.

Daniel Cho let out a soft, incredulous laugh. "Is your client completely insane, Mr. Pendelton?"

"He is the child's father!" Pendelton asserted, standing up. "You cannot deny a father access to his daughter! If you reject this offer, we will drag this through the family courts for the next three years. We will subpoena your corporate records, demand a full psychological evaluation of Miss Hartwell, and ensure that every tabloid in the country covers the messy details of this family war!"

Emily didn't flinch. She didn't look scared. She didn't even look angry. She simply stood up slowly, her dark green suit unwrinkled, her eyes cold as polished ice.

"Are you finished, Mr. Pendelton?" she asked softly.

Pendelton blinked. "I... yes."

Emily picked up a thick folder from the side of her desk and tossed it across the wood, sliding it right into his chest.

"Page one," Emily commanded. "A certified bank record showing that Evan transferred $50,000 of stolen corporate funds into an online gambling account three weeks ago. Page four: a recorded statement from the former CFO admitting under oath that Evan threatened to blacklists him if he didn't approve the Cayman Islands transfers."

Pendelton opened the folder, his hands beginning to shake as he scanned the documents.

"And page ten," Emily continued, her voice echoing with absolute authority, "a sworn affidavit from the lead security officer who witnessed Evan grab my arm and throw me against the counter on the night my mother arrived."

Pendelton’s face went completely pale.

"Tell your client," Emily said, stepping out from behind her desk until she was standing inches from the trembling attorney, "that his proposal is rejected. Tell him that if he attempts to use my daughter as a bargaining chip ever again, I will personally see to it that the District Attorney adds maximum federal extortion charges to his indictment."

"Miss Hartwell..." Pendelton stammered.

"Get out of my office," Emily ordered.

Pendelton snatched his briefcase, practically running out the door as Daniel Cho followed him to ensure he was escorted out of the building by security.

I walked over to Emily, putting my arm around her waist. She leaned her head against my shoulder for a brief second before looking up at me with a proud, fierce grin.

"You handled that brilliantly, my sweet girl," I whispered.

"He thought he was dealing with the frightened girl from the kitchen, Mom," Emily said, her voice filled with an unbreakable strength. "He forgot who raised me."
