Chapter 6 - The Trial of Truth

The courtroom erupted into a flurry of hushed whispers. Richard’s attorneys immediately jumped to their feet, shouting objections about a lack of discovery and unauthorized surveillance, but Judge Henderson raised a single hand, silencing the room with a glare.
"I will review the evidence in chambers for fifteen minutes," Judge Henderson stated coldly. "The children will remain in the custody of the bailiff in the private waiting room. No one approaches them. We are in recess."
Those fifteen minutes felt like fifteen years. I sat on the hard wooden bench in the hallway, my heart hammering against my ribs. Across the corridor, Rebecca was pacing back and forth like a caged animal, cursing at Richard in a fierce, low whisper. Richard sat with his head in his hands, finally realizing that his empire of lies was crumbling around him.
When we were called back into the courtroom, the atmosphere had completely changed. Judge Henderson looked down from the bench, her expression dark and unyielding. She didn't look at Richard’s expensive lawyers. She looked directly at Rebecca.
"Mrs. Vance," the judge said, her voice dripping with ice. "I have reviewed the security footage from your downtown property. I have reviewed the pharmacy logs. And I have read your daughter's diary."
Rebecca opened her mouth to speak, but the judge slammed her gavel down with a sound like a gunshot.
"Silence!" Judge Henderson roared. "The evidence presented by the petitioner is not only credible; it is horrifying. The level of calculated cruelty you have inflicted on these children under the guise of an affluent lifestyle is disgusting. And Mr. Vance," she turned her furious gaze to Richard, "your complicity in leaving your children exposed to this environment while you pursued your corporate interests is a profound failure of parental duty."
Richard grew pale, unable to look the judge in the eye.
"Therefore," Judge Henderson announced, "the motion to dismiss is denied. I am granting the emergency petition for temporary guardianship to Sabrina Reed immediately. Furthermore, I am stripping both biological parents of all visitation rights pending a full, comprehensive psychological evaluation and a criminal investigation by the State's Attorney's office."
"No!" Rebecca screamed, lunging across the table toward me, her fingernails clawing at the air. "You took my life! You took my kids! I'll kill you, Sabrina! I'll kill you!"
Two bailiffs instantly tackled Rebecca to the floor, pinning her arms behind her back as she shrieked obscenities, her perfect cashmere-coated world dissolving into a public arrest for contempt and assault. Richard stood by, frozen, as handcuffs were slapped onto his wife’s wrists.
Marcus Vance turned to me, a huge smile breaking across his face. "You did it, Sabrina. They're safe. They're yours."
I ran out of the courtroom to the private waiting area. The moment I opened the door, Emma, Tyler, and Zoe looked up. They saw the tears in my eyes, but they also saw the smile.
"Aunt Sabrina?" Tyler asked softly. "Do we have to go back to the monster house?"

I dropped to my knees, pulling all three of them into a tight, suffocating embrace, my tears soaking into Tyler’s shirt.
"No, sweetie," I sobbed, laughing through my tears. "The monster house is gone. You're coming home with me. Forever."
