Chapter 5 - The Price of Protection

The next forty-eight hours were a descent into financial and emotional desperation. I called every family law attorney in the county, but the moment I mentioned Richard’s name and his firm, most of them politely declined due to conflicts of interest. The ones who were willing to take the case demanded a retainer fee of $10,000 upfront—money I simply didn't have. My savings account held exactly $2,400.

I sat at my kitchen table at 2:00 AM on Thursday morning, surrounded by printouts of financial statements, legal templates, and Emma's diary. I was drowning.

Then, my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

"Sabrina?" a deep, unfamiliar voice said. "My name is David Vance. I'm a private investigator. I was retained by an anonymous source who wants to see your sister held accountable."

I gripped the phone tightly. "An anonymous source? Who?"

"I can't reveal that due to confidentiality agreements," Vance said smoothly. "But let's just say Richard has made a lot of enemies in his corporate climb, and some people know exactly what kind of monster Rebecca is. I've been tracking her behavior for the last six months. I have footage, Sabrina. Footage that will change everything."

My breath hitched. "What kind of footage?"

"Rebecca has a secret apartment downtown," Vance explained. "She doesn't go there for affairs. She goes there to escape her life. I have security footage of her leaving her children in that suburban mansion alone for forty-eight hours straight while Richard was in New York, with nothing but a box of cereal on the counter. I also have pharmacy logs showing she’s been forging prescriptions for heavy sedatives."

Tears of relief rushed down my face. "Will you testify? Will you submit this to the court on Friday?"

"The files are already encrypted and sent to a family lawyer named Marcus Vance—my brother. He’s taking your case pro bono. He'll meet you at the courthouse tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. Don't give up, Sabrina. The cavalry is coming."

The call ended, and for the first time in weeks, I let myself sob. It was a terrifying reminder of how dark my sister's world truly was, but it was also a lifeline. Someone was watching out for these kids.

The next morning, the courthouse was a cold, imposing fortress of grey stone. I walked in holding Emma, Tyler, and Zoe’s hands. They were dressed in the cleanest clothes I could find, their faces pale but determined.

Marcus Vance was waiting for me near the elevators. He was a sharp, young attorney with an intense energy that immediately made me feel safe. He took the pink diary from my hands, glanced through the pages, and nodded grimly.

"Richard brought two senior partners from his firm," Marcus warned me, pointing toward the courtroom doors. "They’re going to try to paint you as a broke, vindictive relative trying to steal their children for a payout. They’ve already filed a motion to dismiss your petition based on lack of standing."

"Let them try," I said, my voice hardening. "I’m not leaving this building without these kids."

We entered Courtroom 302. The air was thick with tension. Rebecca sat at the defense table, wearing a dark, professional dress, looking like a grieving, honorable mother. Richard sat beside her, surrounded by boxes of legal files and three high-priced attorneys who looked at me like I was a bug they were about to crush under their Italian leather shoes.

The judge, a formidable woman named Judge Evelyn Henderson, took her seat on the bench. She adjusted her glasses and looked down at the paperwork.

"We are here today regarding the emergency petition for temporary guardianship of Emma, Tyler, and Zoe Vance," Judge Henderson announced. "Petitioner is Sabrina Reed, maternal aunt. Respondents are the biological parents. Counsel, state your appearances."

Richard’s lead attorney stood up, his voice booming with confidence. "Your Honor, this petition is an absolute travesty. It is a frivolous, malicious attempt by a financially unstable relative to extort my clients. We move for an immediate dismissal and an order for the immediate return of the children to their primary residence."

Marcus Vance stood up, his demeanor perfectly calm. "Your Honor, if I may. Before you consider the motion to dismiss, we would like to submit new, critical evidence regarding the immediate and severe danger these children face under the care of the respondents."

He stepped forward, placing a thick manila folder and a digital flash drive on the bailiff’s desk.

"Inside this file," Marcus said, his voice echoing through the quiet courtroom, "are security logs, eyewitness testimonies, and medical records proving that Rebecca Vance has systematically abused, neglected, and abandoned her children for years. And her husband, Richard Vance, was fully aware of the abuse and chose to conceal it to protect his corporate reputation."

Across the aisle, Rebecca’s face turned from a mask of tragic dignity to an expression of absolute, venomous terror.
