Chapter 4 - The Legal Abyss

The presence of the police officers brought a sudden, suffocating silence to the room. Rebecca immediately transformed. The manic rage disappeared, replaced instantly by a trembling, fragile vulnerability that made me want to gag. She collapsed into Richard’s arms, sobbing softly.

"Officer, thank God you're here," Rebecca whimpered, her voice dripping with theatrical terror. "My sister... she's unstable. She kidnapped my children two weeks ago, and now she's refusing to give them back. She attacked me when I tried to take my daughter."

The younger officer looked at me, his expression cautious. "Ma'am, is this true? Are these her children?"

"They are her biological children," I said, my heart pounding against my ribs. "But she abandoned them here two weeks ago without adequate food or care. I have filed an emergency petition for temporary custody due to severe emotional and physical neglect. Look at them, Officer. They are terrified of her."

The older officer walked over to the kitchen table, where Tyler and Zoe were huddled under Emma’s arms. He knelt down, softening his voice. "Hey there, sweetheart. I'm Officer Martinez. Can you tell me what's going on?"

Emma looked up, her little body shaking. She looked at her mother, who was glaring at her with a hidden, lethal promise behind her fake tears. Then she looked at me.

"We... we want to stay with Aunt Sabrina," Emma whispered. "Mommy gets really angry. She locks us up."

"She's lying!" Rebecca barked, stepping forward before Richard pulled her back. "Sabrina coached her to say that! She wants our money! She's trying to extort us!"

Officer Martinez stood up, his face grim. He turned to Richard and Rebecca, then to me. "Here's the reality of the situation. Without a formal warrant or an active safety order from DCFS, I cannot legally prevent a biological parent from taking their children. The law is very specific about this."

"No," I pleaded, stepping in front of the kids. "You can't let her take them. Look at them!"

"However," Martinez continued, raising a hand to cut me off, "given the allegations made by the child and the visible distress of the minors, I am required by law to file a formal report with the Department of Children and Family Services immediately. Furthermore, sir," he looked directly at Richard, "if you take these children out of the jurisdiction before the Friday court date your sister-in-law mentioned, it will look incredibly bad to a judge. I strongly advise you to leave the children here until the emergency hearing."

Richard, ever the calculated lawyer, recognized the legal quicksand they were standing in. A police report detailing a scene like this, combined with an active DCFS investigation, could ruin his career and his standing in the firm.

"Fine," Richard said coldly, grabbing Rebecca’s coat. "We will leave them here for now. But I promise you, Sabrina, on Friday morning, my legal team will strip you of everything you own. You want to play games with my family? You're going to lose."

Rebecca screamed obscenities as Richard dragged her out of the house, her perfect facade completely shattered. The luxury SUV roared away from the curb, leaving a cloud of exhaust in the freezing air.

Officer Martinez sighed, handing me a small card with a report number on it. "You bought yourself three days, ma'am. But you need to get a serious lawyer. On Friday, the burden of proof is on you, and a family court judge isn't going to take kids away from a wealthy home without smoking-gun evidence."

I thanked the officers, closed the door, and locked it with three separate deadbolts.

I looked at the children. They had survived the first battle, but the war had just begun. I had three days to find a lawyer I couldn't afford, gather evidence against a multi-millionaire, and prepare to face the most terrifying entity in the world: a mother scorned.
