Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Hales

By 6:00 AM the following morning, the political landscape of the state had collapsed.

Every major news station was running live, breaking coverage of the scandal. Leaked audio files played on national television showed Senator Eleanor Hale explicitly offering Detective Briggs two hundred thousand dollars and a promotion to Commander if he "lost" the physical evidence from Lily’s attack.

At 8:30 AM, federal agents from the Department of Justice executed a search warrant at Senator Hale’s campaign headquarters.

I sat in the hospital room, watching the television muted on the wall while Lily rested. Her swelling had significantly decreased, though her jaw remained wired shut. She watched the screen with wide, disbelieving eyes as Senator Hale was led out of her office in handcuffs, surrounded by a swarm of news reporters shouting questions.

Lily looked over at me, then picked up her dry-erase marker.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? she wrote.

I stroked her hair gently. "Truth has a way of coming to light, sweetheart. When people do bad things for a long time, they forget that the world is watching."

She looked at me intently, sensing the massive gap between my simple explanation and the cataclysmic downfall of the state's most powerful political family.

Before she could write another question, Detective Frank Briggs knocked on the open door frame. He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes, but his expression was lighter than it had been in years.

"Mr. Walker," Briggs said, stepping into the room and tipping his hat to Lily. "Can I speak to you in the hallway for a moment?"

I nodded, gave Lily’s hand a squeeze, and followed Briggs outside.

"Senator Hale is in federal custody," Briggs said, leaning against the wall and shaking his head in disbelief. "Her lawyer tried to post bail, but the federal judge designated her a flight risk based on offshore financial accounts that mysteriously appeared in the prosecution’s inbox at dawn."

"That sounds like good news for justice, Detective," I said mildly.

Briggs looked at me long and hard. He was a smart cop; he knew things didn't happen like this in the real world without an invisible hand guiding the scales.

"The campus guard, Vance, gave a full statement," Briggs continued. "He said three boys—Ethan Cole, Brandon Hale, and Tyler Whitmore—brutally attacked your daughter because she refused Ethan’s advances at an off-campus party. They thought they could beat her into silence."

My jaw tightened, the blood rushing hot through my veins, but my posture remained perfectly calm. "And the boys?"

"Their bail hearings are scheduled for 2:00 PM today," Briggs said. "Richard Cole and Arthur Whitmore have hired the top criminal defense firm in the country. They're going to argue that the evidence was gathered unlawfully."

"They can argue whatever they wish," I said softly. "The courtroom will not save them."

Briggs hesitated, then stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Mr. Walker... I don't know who you used to be. And frankly, given what’s happening to the dirtiest people in this city, I don't think I want to know. Just... let the legal system handle the boys. We have enough to put them away for fifteen years."

I looked at Detective Briggs—a good man fighting a clean fight in a dirty world.

"I will let the legal system do its job, Detective," I said quietly. "As long as the legal system does not fail my daughter."
