Chapter 3 - The Arrest

The Alpha Sigma Theta house was an imposing Georgian mansion on the northern edge of the university campus, built with money donated by Tyler Whitmore’s grandfather in 1968.

By 2:00 PM, three black-and-white police cruisers, accompanied by two unmarked detective sedans, pulled up to the front lawn. Camera crews from three local news networks were already positioned behind the perimeter tape.

I watched from inside a tinted SUV parked down the block.

Detective Frank Briggs—an honest cop who had spent fifteen years passed over for promotions because he refused to take bribes from Senator Hale’s office—marched up the stone steps with four uniformed officers.

Through the double mahogany doors of the fraternity house, shouting broke out. Minutes later, the doors burst open.

Ethan Cole was dragged out first. He was wearing an expensive cashmere sweater and sweatpants, his face flushed red with rage as two officers pinned his arms behind his back.

"Do you know who my father is?!" Cole screamed at the news cameras, thrashing against his restraints. "My dad will have your badges by tonight! Unhand me, you f***ing losers!"

Next came Tyler Whitmore, looking pale and disoriented, followed by Brandon Hale. Brandon wasn't shouting; he was smirking, staring directly into a news camera as if the entire proceeding were an inconvenient joke that his mother’s legal team would erase before dinner.

They were loaded into the back of separate patrol cars and driven away under the glare of flashing red and blue lights.

My phone rang again. It was Marcus.

"Richard Cole just landed his helicopter at the downtown heliport," Marcus reported. "He’s convened an emergency meeting at his legal firm on 5th Avenue. Senator Hale and Arthur Whitmore are already there."

"They're gathering their circle," I said. "They think this is a legal fight."

"What are your orders?"

"Shut down Richard Cole's primary revenue stream," I said. "The port expansion project on Pier 12. He’s using non-union labor and forged structural safety certifications. Call the harbor master’s office and activate the legacy union protocols."

"The harbor master hasn't heard the name 'The Ghost' in two decades, Boss," Marcus noted.

"He remembers," I replied. "Tell him that if a single crane moves on Pier 12 after 4:00 PM today, every longshoreman from Maine to Virginia goes on strike by midnight."

"Understood."

I started the engine and drove toward 5th Avenue. The preliminary skirmish was over. Now, the war against their empire began.
