Chapter 5 - The Retaliation

They didn't listen. Men like Richard Cole never listen until their blood is spilled on the floor.

At 11:00 PM that night, two black SUVs with blacked-out windows pulled up outside the small two-story suburban house I owned on Elm Street. Four armed men carrying suppressed automatic pistols slipped out of the vehicles and moved stealthily toward the front porch.

They kicked the front door open, breaching the living room with tactical precision, weapons raised.

The house was empty.

Sitting on the small coffee table in the center of the room was a single brass antique lamp, throwing a warm yellow light over a heavy black landline telephone.

The telephone began to ring.

The lead gunman, a hardened mercenary named Frank Logan who had spent ten years doing dirty work for private defense contractors, cautiously approached the table and picked up the receiver.

"Logan," I said through the speaker.

Logan stiffened. "Where are you, Walker?"

"Look out the front window, Frank," I replied.

Logan pulled back the curtain slightly. Across the street, sitting inside an unmarked armored sedan, I sat holding a night-vision thermal scope.

"You were hired by Richard Cole for two hundred thousand dollars to eliminate me and make it look like a home invasion," I said casually. "What Cole didn't tell you is that your employer’s primary offshore bank account in Nassau was liquidated forty-five minutes ago."

Logan’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"Check your tactical unit’s account," I instructed. "The two hundred thousand dollar retainer Cole paid you just bounced. In fact, every account tied to Cole Construction has been frozen by the Federal Department of Financial Crimes."

Inside the house, Logan’s second-in-command checked his rugged tactical tablet. His face went pale. "Frank... the wire transfer... it’s gone. The whole company account is zeroed out."

Logan swallowed hard, his grip on the phone tightening. "Who the hell are you?"

"I am the man who paid your team’s pensions back when you worked for Blackwater in 2008," I said. "Drop your weapons, leave the house, and tell Richard Cole that his time has run out."

Logan didn't hesitate. He dropped the receiver, looked at his men, and barked, "We're done here. Pack it up. Now!"

They rushed out of the house, piled into their SUVs, and sped off into the night, leaving Richard Cole entirely undefended.

I picked up my secure satellite phone and dialed Marcus.

"Is the press package ready?" I asked.

"Ready to broadcast, Boss," Marcus replied. "We have the bank records, the safety forgery documents, and the wiretap recordings of Senator Hale trying to bribe Detective Briggs."

"Send it to every news outlet in the country," I ordered. "And Marcus?"

May you like

"Yes, Boss?"

"Tell the state police to prepare a cell for a state senator."
