Chapter 10 - The Garden of June Rose

A year later, the courtyard of the Vale estate was transformed. The high security walls were still there, hidden behind thick hedges of green ivy, but the atmosphere inside the iron gates had completely changed.

The sound of automated gunfire and whispering underbosss was replaced by the bright, sweeping chords of a classical string quartet playing near the marble fountain. It was June Rose's twenty-fifth birthday—the first birthday she was celebrating with her real family.

Over a hundred guests filled the lawn—not just soldiers in dark suits, but local business owners, childhood friends June had reconnected with from community college, and members of the charitable foundations Dominic had begun funding in honor of his late wife.

June stood on the terrace, wearing a beautiful green silk dress that caught the late afternoon sunlight. The tiny gold locket—now clean, polished, and securely attached to a brand-new platinum chain—rested against her collarbone.

A hand dropped gently onto her shoulder.

She turned to see Dominic standing next to her, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, a glass of expensive champagne in his hand. He looked younger than he had a year ago; the deep lines of exhaustion around his eyes had faded, replaced by the peace of a man who had finally finished his long march through the dark.

"What are you looking at, June?" he asked softly, his eyes tracing the crowd below.

"I was just thinking about the first day I came here," June said, a faint smile touching her lips. "I was so terrified of you. I thought you were going to lock me in a room and make me pay for a debt I didn't even owe."

"I was a man living in a tomb, June," Dominic said, his voice full of a quiet emotion. "When your mother died and you vanished, the only thing that kept me alive was the anger. I thought that if I became the most dangerous thing in this state, I could protect the memory of what I lost. I didn't realize that the only thing that could save me was the child who survived the storm."

He reached out, his large, warm hand covering hers on the stone railing.

"The Newark docks are officially under legitimate commercial management now," Dominic announced quietly. "Matteo took over the logistics firm this morning. The old business is dead, June. The Vale family is clean. From this day forward, our name stands for something your mother would be proud of."

June looked down at her locket, then back up at her father, her heart overflowing with a peace she had spent a lifetime searching for.

"She is proud, Dad," June whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder. "I can feel it."

From the lawn below, Marco and Matteo looked up, raising their glasses to the terrace in a silent, respectful toast to the Don and his daughter. The wind swept through the garden, carrying the scent of white roses across the courtyard, scattering the petals onto the stone paths like a final blessing on a family that had survived the dark to find the morning.

The debt was paid. The secrets were buried. and June Rose Vale was finally, beautifully home.
