Chapter 4 - The Secrets of the Vault

The transition from the squalor of her old life to the absolute opulence of the Vale estate was dizzying. Within a week, the thrift-store tag on her sleeve was replaced by custom-tailored silk blouses, cashmere sweaters, and a security detail that followed her every move from a respectful distance of ten paces.
But June—she had decided to use her real name now, a small rebellion against the Keenes—couldn't ignore the rumblings beneath the surface of the house. The estate wasn't just a home; it was a fortress.
One afternoon, while Dominic was away in the city dealing with what his underboss, Matteo, called "territorial adjustments," June wandered down to the mansion's library. It was a massive room filled with leather-bound volumes, oil paintings of old Italian landscapes, and a heavy scent of tobacco and beeswax.
While looking for a book on history, her hand brushed against a carved wooden panel near the fireplace. A soft click echoed through the room, and a section of the bookshelf slid back three inches, revealing a narrow, well-lit stone staircase leading downward.
Curiosity overriding her caution, June stepped into the passage. The stairs led to a reinforced steel bunker—the tactical heart of the Vale empire.
The walls were lined with digital monitors displaying live feeds of the estate's perimeter, the Newark shipping docks, and several commercial properties in Manhattan. In the center of the room stood a long steel table covered in financial ledgers, legal documents, and a series of old, faded police reports from 2002.
June walked over to the table, her eyes scanning the old documents. One file was labeled: THE SAINT GERARD MEDICAL INCIDENT - UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL.
Inside were crime scene photographs, ballistics reports, and a list of hospital staff who had been on duty the night she was stolen. As she flipped through the pages, a recent document caught her eye. It was an interrogation transcript dated just forty-eight hours ago.
Interrogator: Matteo Rossi (Underboss)
Subject: Daniel Keene
Transcript Excerpt: "We didn't act alone, Matteo. I swear to God! We were just small-time collectors. A guy named Silvio from the Lucchese family gave us the badge to get into the north wing. He told us to take the baby and disappear. He said if we ever brought her back to Newark before she turned twenty-five, he'd kill our whole family."
June gasped, dropping the file onto the table. The Keenes hadn't just accidentally stumbled upon her in the chaos. They had been part of a coordinated hit orchestrated by her father’s greatest rivals.
"You shouldn't be down here, June," a voice said from the shadows of the staircase.
June spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs. Matteo Rossi stood at the bottom of the stairs, his dark suit impeccable, a pair of leather gloves tucked into his belt. He didn't look angry; he looked concerned.
"Is it true?" June asked, pointing at the file. "The Lucchese family paid them to take me?"
Matteo stepped into the light of the monitors, his face grim. "Your father didn't want you to know this yet. He wanted to give you time to adjust to being safe before the war started again. But yes. The Lucchese family used the Keenes to break Dominic’s soul. A man who is grieving a wife and a missing child is a man who cannot run an empire. It took your father ten years to rebuild what they stole from him during those months of searching."
"Where are they now?" June whispered, a cold dread settling into her stomach. "The Keenes?"
"They are where they belong," Matteo said smoothly. "But the problem isn't the Keenes anymore, June. The problem is that Silvio—the man who gave them the badge—is now the boss of the Lucchese family. And his spies in the city just found out that Dominic Vale cancelled his meetings because his daughter came home."

The monitors on the wall suddenly flashed red. A loud, electronic chime echoed through the bunker, and the live feed of the main iron gates showed a caravan of black SUVs pulling up to the estate's perimeter.
"Stay here," Matteo ordered, drawing a silver semi-automatic pistol from his jacket. "The past has just arrived at our front door."
