Chapter 6 - The Bloodline War

The departure of the Lucchese family turned the Vale estate into an active military zone. Within twenty-four hours, over fifty high-ranking soldiers from the outer boroughs arrived at the house, their vehicles lining the private roads, their weapons out and ready.

Dominic sat at the head of the library table, a massive paper map of New York and New Jersey laid out before him. Matteo stood to his right, while June sat at the far end, her presence no longer hidden. She was part of the council now, whether she wanted to be or not.

"Silvio is moving his crews to the borders of Newark," Matteo explained, pointing to several red markers on the map. "He’s calling in reinforcements from the Genovese family in New York. He’s trying to box us in before the commission can vote on whether this is a justified conflict."

"The commission doesn't matter," Dominic said, not looking up from the map. "This isn't about business. This is about my daughter. If they want a war, I will give them one that will burn this state to the ground."

"Dad," June said, the word awkward but firm on her tongue.

Dominic looked up instantly, his expression softening the moment she spoke. "Yes, June?"

"The Keenes," she said, her hands tightly clasped in her lap. "You said they were down in the basement. I want to see them. I want to hear the truth from them before everything falls apart."

Dominic hesitated, his protective instincts warring with the look of absolute determination in his daughter’s eyes. Finally, he nodded slowly. "Matteo, take her down. But keep two men with her at all times."

The basement of the estate was not a medieval dungeon; it was a modern, soundproofed storage facility under the garage. Two heavy steel doors led to separate holding rooms.

When the guard unlocked the first door, June stepped into a well-lit room with a single table and two chairs. Marlene Keene sat there, her thrift-store dress stained with sweat, her mascara smeared across her wrinkled cheeks. She looked twenty years older than she had a week ago.

When she saw June walk in, she lunged forward, her handcuffs rattling against the steel ring on the table. "Harper! Oh my God, Harper, tell them to let me go! You have to help us! We're your parents! We raised you!"

June didn't sit down. She stood by the door, her security detail flanking her like twin towers of shadow.

"You're not my mother, Marlene," June said, her voice surprisingly steady. "My mother died in a hospital room while you were waiting outside with a stolen badge. Her name was Isabella Vale."

Marlene’s face twisted into an ugly, desperate sneer. "Isabella Vale was a dead woman the moment she married Dominic! We saved your life, you ungrateful little bitch! If we hadn't taken you, Silvio’s men would have thrown you into the river to make sure Dominic didn't have an heir! We kept you alive for twenty-four years!"

"You kept me as an insurance policy," June corrected, her voice cold with a clarity she had never felt before. "You starved me, you lied to me, and when you couldn't pay your debts, you sold me back to the very man you stole me from. You didn't save me, Marlene. You just delayed my life."

She turned toward the door, but Marlene screamed after her, her voice cracking with madness. "You think you're safe here? Dominic Vale is a monster! He’s killed more men than you've ever met! You think he loves you? He just loves the memory of his dead wife! You're nothing but a ghost to him!"

June stopped, her hand on the heavy steel handle. She looked back over her shoulder, her eyes burning with the old, unyielding spirit of the Rose lineage.

"He recognized my name, Marlene. He recognized my locket. And he recognized my scar. You looked at me for twenty-four years and only saw a debt. He looked at me for two minutes and saw his daughter. That’s the difference between a family and a cage."
