CHAPTER 5 – THE WOMAN WHO BROKE THE MAFIA KING

The Vale mansion had survived wars.

It had survived betrayals.

It had survived the deaths of men who believed they were powerful enough to bring the family down.

But it had never been attacked like this.

Because the people coming through the gates tonight were not strangers.

They knew the security codes.

They knew the cameras.

They knew the guards’ positions.

They knew exactly where Adrian Vale kept his weaknesses.

And that was what terrified him most.

Someone inside had opened the door.

The first explosion shook the entire east wing.

Glass shattered.

Lights flickered.

The mansion fell into darkness.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Adrian’s instincts took over.

“Claire!”

His voice cut through the chaos.

She appeared at the top of the stairs, holding Maddie’s hand.

The little girl was terrified.

Adrian looked at her.

“Take her to the safe room.”

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian stared.

“No?”

“I’m not leaving you.”

“This is not a discussion.”

“It stopped being a discussion when they came for my daughter.”

The words silenced him.

Because she was right.

Claire Morgan was not the woman from fifteen years ago anymore.

She was not someone waiting to be protected.

She was a mother.

And mothers were dangerous when their children were threatened.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Claire.”

Her eyes met his.

“Bring her back to me.”

A strange emotion crossed her face.

Because for the first time…

Adrian was not giving an order.

He was asking.

She nodded.

“I will.”

Then she disappeared with Maddie.

Adrian turned toward the darkness.

The cold returned.

The man Chicago feared returned.

“Find them.”

His men moved.

The first attacker entered through the west corridor.

He never reached the second hallway.

Adrian moved through the shadows silently.

The man saw him too late.

A struggle.

A weapon dropped.

A body against the marble floor.

Adrian looked at the man’s jacket.

No markings.

No identification.

Professional.

Not street criminals.

Not rivals.

Someone trained.

Someone expensive.

He searched the man.

And found something.

A small metal symbol.

A black raven.

Adrian froze.

Because he knew that symbol.

Everyone in the old Vale organization knew it.

The Raven Circle.

A secret group that existed before Adrian inherited the empire.

A group his father had supposedly destroyed.

Supposedly.

Adrian stared at the symbol.

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

A voice answered from behind him.

“Funny.”

Adrian turned.

Thomas Reed stood in the hallway.

Holding a gun.

For a moment, neither man moved.

The oldest servant of the Vale family.

The man who had taught Adrian how to negotiate.

The man who had stood beside him after Matthew died.

The man who had helped him become king.

“You.”

Thomas looked tired.

Not afraid.

“Adrian.”

The disappointment in his voice almost sounded real.

Almost.

“You’re the one who betrayed Matthew.”

Thomas lowered his weapon slightly.

“You still think this is simple.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“It is.”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“You inherited your father’s arrogance.”

The words made Adrian stop.

“What did you say?”

Thomas looked around the mansion.

“All these years, you thought you were different from him.”

A bitter smile.

“But look at you.”

“Running an empire built on fear.”

“Punishing enemies.”

“Controlling everyone around you.”

“You became exactly what he created.”

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

“And you helped.”

Thomas did not deny it.

That was the worst part.

“You were never supposed to find Claire.”

“Why?”

“Because Matthew ruined everything.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Matthew was your family.”

“No.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

“He was a weakness.”

The words hung in the air.

Then Adrian understood.

Thomas never loved the Vale family.

He loved power.

“My father trusted you.”

“My father was a fool.”

Adrian stared.

Thomas continued:

“He believed fear was enough to control people.”

A pause.

“But fear disappears.”

Thomas lifted the gun.

“Legacy does not.”

A sound came from the stairs.

A small voice.

“Uncle Adrian?”

Both men froze.

Maddie.

Claire stood behind her, unable to stop her daughter from seeing.

Thomas looked at the child.

And something changed.

Recognition.

Fear.

Adrian noticed.

“You know her.”

Thomas said nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You know exactly who she is.”

The old man’s face hardened.

“She should never have survived.”

The sentence changed everything.

Adrian moved before he even thought.

The gun fired.

The bullet hit the wall.

Adrian reached Thomas instantly.

The two men crashed into the floor.

Years of experience.

Years of violence.

But Thomas was older.

Smarter.

He fought differently.

Like someone who had survived longer than he should have.

“You think killing me fixes this?” Thomas whispered.

Adrian pressed harder.

“No.”

His voice was ice.

“I think making you talk does.”

Thomas was locked in the underground room beneath the mansion.

The same room Adrian had used for enemies.

Now he was using it for someone who had once poured him coffee every morning.

The irony was not lost on him.

Claire stood beside Adrian.

“You’re angry.”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

“But not because he betrayed you.”

Adrian said nothing.

Claire continued:

“Because he betrayed Matthew.”

That was the truth.

And Adrian hated that she knew him so well.

“You should hate me too.”

Claire looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I became everything Matthew hated.”

She stepped closer.

“No.”

Adrian looked away.

“I built this empire.”

“Yes.”

“I hurt people.”

“Yes.”

“I became a monster.”

Claire was silent for a moment.

Then:

“Maybe.”

The answer surprised him.

She continued.

“But monsters don’t protect children.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Monsters don’t care if they lose everything to save someone else.”

A pause.

“You are not your past.”

Those words stayed with him.

Because nobody had ever offered him forgiveness.

Not even himself.

Inside the interrogation room, Thomas finally spoke.

“You want the truth?”

Adrian sat across from him.

“Yes.”

Thomas laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what you’re asking for.”

“Try me.”

Thomas leaned forward.

“Your father did not create the Vale empire.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Thomas smiled.

“You know pieces.”

He looked toward the ceiling.

“The Vale name existed before your father.”

Adrian listened.

“The family was powerful because they owned information.”

“Secrets.”

“Evidence.”

“People’s weaknesses.”

Thomas looked back.

“Your father discovered that the real power was not money.”

“It was knowing what people wanted hidden.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“And Matthew found the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“What was inside?”

Thomas smiled.

“Everything.”

A pause.

“Politicians.”

“Judges.”

“Business leaders.”

“Police.”

“People who built their careers on pretending they were clean.”

Adrian stared.

“And my father used it.”

“He controlled them.”

Thomas leaned closer.

“But Matthew found something worse.”

“What?”

Thomas lowered his voice.

“He found your name.”

Silence.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“My name?”

“Yes.”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“The reason your father was so protective of you.”

Adrian waited.

“He wasn’t preparing you to inherit the empire.”

A pause.

“He was preparing you to take the blame.”

The room went cold.

Adrian felt something break.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Something he had protected for years.

His belief that his father, despite everything, loved him.

Thomas continued.

“Your father knew one day someone would expose the truth.”

“So he created a shield.”

Adrian whispered:

“Me.”

Thomas nodded.

“You were the perfect person.”

Young.

Ambitious.

Angry.

A son desperate to prove himself.

Adrian stood slowly.

For the first time in years…

He had no words.

Later that night, Adrian stood outside the safe room.

Maddie was asleep.

Claire sat beside her.

Watching him.

“You found the truth.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Not all of it.”

“But enough.”

He nodded.

Claire approached.

“What happens now?”

Adrian looked through the glass at the city.

The city that feared him.

The city he had ruled.

The city built on secrets.

“Now I burn it down.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“Adrian.”

“Not the people.”

He looked at her.

“The lies.”

A long silence.

“You’re going to lose everything.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“Your money.”

“Yes.”

“Your power.”

“Yes.”

“Your reputation.”

“Yes.”

Claire studied him.

“Then why?”

Adrian looked at Maddie.

Then back at Claire.

“Because for the first time in my life…”

His voice softened.

“I have something worth losing.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

And Adrian realized something terrifying.

The woman who carried Matthew’s secret…

Had become the woman carrying his heart.

But neither of them saw the figure watching from across the street.

A man standing beneath the rain.

Holding an old photograph.

A photograph of Matthew.

And beside him…

A younger Adrian.

The stranger smiled.

“Good.”

He whispered.

“He finally knows.”

He folded the photograph.

“Now he can learn the last truth.”

The man stepped into the darkness.

“The boy who became the king…”

A pause.

“Was never the real heir.”

Inside the mansion, Adrian looked out at the city.

He thought the war was against Thomas.

Against his father’s legacy.

Against the people who destroyed Matthew.

He was wrong.

Because the biggest secret had not been revealed yet.

The Vale empire was built on a lie.

May you like

And Adrian Vale…

Was about to discover that even his own bloodline had been rewritten.
