CHAPTER 2 – THE CHILD WHO KNEW HIS NAME

Adrian Vale had faced men who wanted him dead.
He had faced enemies with guns, knives, money, and entire armies behind them.
He had stared into the eyes of men who knew they would never leave the room alive and watched them pretend they were not afraid.
But nothing had prepared him for a seven-year-old girl sitting at a kitchen table, coloring a picture of three people who were supposed to be impossible.
A father.
A mother.
And a child.
Maddie.
Adrian stood near the doorway of Claire’s apartment, unable to move.
The photograph was still in his hand.
Matthew’s handwriting burned into his mind.
Protect my family, Adrian.
Fifteen years.
Fifteen years since his brother died.
Fifteen years since Adrian buried the last piece of himself that still believed people could be good.
He remembered that night.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The rain.
Always the rain.
A younger Adrian had stood outside the emergency room, twenty-two years old, his hands covered in blood that wasn’t his.
Matthew had been gone before he arrived.
That was what they told him.
A robbery gone wrong.
A random attack.
A tragedy.
Everyone had told him the same lie.
And Adrian had believed it because the truth was too painful.
Because accepting that Matthew’s death was planned meant accepting that he had failed the one person who had ever loved him without wanting anything in return.
Now Claire was standing in front of him, telling him Matthew had left behind a daughter.
A daughter nobody knew existed.
A daughter someone wanted dead.
Adrian looked at Maddie.
She was carefully coloring a picture of a house.
A small yellow house.
A family standing in front of it.
The man in the picture had dark hair.
The woman had brown hair.
The little girl had a yellow coat.
Just like tonight.
“You draw that often?” Adrian asked.
Maddie looked up.
She nodded.
“My mama says happy families should exist somewhere.”
Adrian glanced at Claire.
She looked away.
That answer hurt more than it should have.
Because Adrian knew something about families.
They were not built by blood alone.
They were built by people who stayed.
And he had spent his entire life watching everyone leave.
“Tell me everything.”
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
But everyone in the room understood it was not a request.
Claire looked exhausted.
She had spent years carrying something too heavy for one person.
Now that weight was being placed on him.
“I met Matthew when I was twenty.”
Adrian listened.
“He wasn’t like you.”
A muscle moved in Adrian’s jaw.
“I know.”
Claire shook her head.
“No. You don’t.”
She looked at the photograph.
“Matthew was the kind of man who apologized when someone bumped into him.”
For a brief moment, Adrian almost smiled.
Because that sounded exactly like his brother.
“He hated what your family did.”
The smile disappeared.
“He told me your father built the Vale empire through fear. He said he wanted nothing to do with it.”
Adrian looked down.
That was true.
Matthew had always hated the business.
He hated the violence.
He hated the way their last name made people afraid.
“He wanted to leave,” Claire continued.
“He wanted a normal life.”
Her fingers touched the edge of the photograph.
“A house. A garden. Children.”
Adrian looked at Maddie again.
The little girl was still drawing.
“Then why didn’t he?”
Claire’s eyes became darker.
“Because he found out something.”
“What?”
She hesitated.
“Your father had a secret account.”
Adrian frowned.
“That’s not unusual.”
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“This was different.”
The room became quiet.
“Your father wasn’t just hiding money.”
She lowered her voice.
“He was hiding evidence.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Evidence of what?”
Claire looked toward the door.
Even after fifteen years, she still feared someone hearing.
“Your family’s first major expansion wasn’t through business.”
Adrian already knew where this was going.
But he wanted her to say it.
“They destroyed competitors.”
Claire nodded.
“Not just financially.”
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
His father had always been ruthless.
But there were lines.
Or at least Adrian had believed there were.
“What did Matthew find?”
Claire swallowed.
“He found names.”
“Whose names?”
“People your father ordered removed.”
Silence.
The word hung there.
Removed.
Not killed.
Not murdered.
A cleaner word.
A businessman’s word.
Adrian hated it.
Because he understood exactly what it meant.
“Matthew was going to expose him.”
Claire nodded.
“And someone found out.”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“My father killed him.”
Claire’s silence answered.
Adrian turned away.
“No.”
Claire watched him.
“You don’t want to believe it.”
“I know my father.”
“Do you?”
The question was simple.
But it cut deep.
Because Adrian had spent years becoming the very thing his father created.
The empire.
The fear.
The crown.
Maybe he knew his father better than anyone.
Maybe he never knew him at all.
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Adrian reached into his coat.
His private phone.
Only five people had that number.
He answered.
“Speak.”
The voice on the other end belonged to his security chief.
“Boss.”
Adrian heard the hesitation.
“What?”
“We found something.”
“Where?”
“At the apartment you sent us to investigate.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What apartment?”
A pause.
Then:
“Claire Morgan’s old apartment.”
Adrian looked at Claire.
She immediately went pale.
“How did you know that address?”
Adrian ignored the question.
“What did you find?”
The voice became lower.
“Someone searched the place before we arrived.”
“Who?”
“We don’t know.”
Adrian’s hand tightened around the phone.
“Anything else?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“They left a message.”
The room went silent.
Adrian’s voice became dangerous.
“Read it.”
His security chief hesitated.
Then:
“‘The Vale bloodline should have ended with Matthew.’”
Adrian closed his eyes.
For one second.
Only one.
Then the cold mask returned.
“Send everyone.”
“Boss?”
“Everyone.”
Thirty minutes later, the apartment was surrounded.
Adrian’s men moved through the building.
Checking windows.
Checking exits.
Searching every shadow.
Claire watched from the couch.
“You’re bringing danger here.”
Adrian stood by the window.
“Danger was already here.”
“You don’t understand.”
He turned.
“Yes, I do.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“You don’t understand what happens when people know about Maddie.”
Adrian looked at the little girl sleeping against the couch.
His expression softened slightly.
Almost invisible.
Almost.
“They won’t touch her.”
Claire stared at him.
“You can’t promise that.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Yes.”
His voice was low.
“I can.”
She studied him.
“Why?”
That question surprised him.
Why?
Because she was Matthew’s daughter?
Because blood mattered?
Because his brother deserved better?
Because he had failed Matthew once?
Adrian looked at Maddie.
Then back at Claire.
“Because nobody takes family from me twice.”
Claire froze.
For the first time, she saw something beneath the monster.
A wounded man.
A man who had lost too much.
Near midnight, Adrian’s phone rang again.
This time, it was Victor Kane.
His lieutenant.
The man who had become too ambitious.
Too careless.
Too confident.
Adrian answered.
“What?”
“Boss, we need to talk.”
“About?”
A pause.
Then Victor said:
“About the woman in your apartment.”
Adrian’s eyes sharpened.
“How do you know about her?”
Silence.
Too long.
Adrian slowly looked toward his men.
None of them spoke.
None of them moved.
That meant only one thing.
Someone was leaking information.
“Victor.”
“Yes?”
“Who told you?”
Another pause.
Then:
“You need to understand something.”
Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.
“What?”
“The woman you saved tonight…”
Victor lowered his voice.
“She’s not just carrying Matthew’s secret.”
Adrian said nothing.
“She’s carrying the reason your entire empire could collapse.”
The line went dead.
Adrian stared at the phone.
Then slowly looked at Claire.
She knew immediately.
“What happened?”
Adrian walked toward her.
“Tell me the truth.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“You said Matthew left something behind.”
Claire became still.
“What else?”
Silence.
Adrian stepped closer.
“What else are you hiding?”
A tear appeared in her eyes.
And that frightened him more than anger would have.
Because Claire looked like someone who had been waiting years to say something.
Something impossible.
Something dangerous.
Finally, she whispered:
“Matthew wasn’t the only one who discovered the truth.”
Adrian waited.
“He left proof.”
“Where?”
Claire looked at Maddie.
Then at him.
“He trusted only one person to keep it safe.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Who?”
Claire answered:
“You.”
Adrian frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“Because Matthew knew something about you.”
A long pause.
“He knew that one day you would become the most powerful man in Chicago.”
Adrian stared.
“And he knew the only person strong enough to destroy the Vale empire…”
Claire stepped closer.
“Would be the person who inherited it.”
The rain hit the windows harder.
Somewhere outside, a car engine started.
Adrian noticed.
Too late.
A bullet shattered the glass.
Claire screamed.
Adrian moved instantly.
He grabbed Maddie and pulled her down.
Another shot.
Then another.
The apartment exploded into chaos.
Men shouted.
Weapons appeared.
Glass fell like ice.
Adrian covered the child with his body.
And in that moment…
The most feared man in Chicago realized something terrifying.
Someone was not trying to kill him.
They were trying to kill the last piece of Matthew Vale.
His family.
And whoever was behind this…
Had just made the biggest mistake of their life.
Because Adrian Vale no longer cared about protecting a throne.
May you like
He cared about protecting a child.
And he was about to remind Chicago why everyone feared his name.
