CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY ADRIAN VALE

The first thing Adrian Vale heard after the gunshots was silence.
Not peaceful silence.
The kind that came after violence.
The kind that made every instinct inside him wake up.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Three seconds where the entire world held its breath.
Then Adrian heard Maddie crying.
“Mom…”
That single word cut through everything.
Adrian looked down.
The little girl was beneath his arm, protected by his body. Her yellow raincoat was torn at the shoulder. Her stuffed rabbit was pressed tightly against her chest.
She was terrified.
But she was alive.
Adrian looked toward Claire.
She was on the floor beside the couch.
A small line of blood ran down her forehead.
But she was looking at Maddie.
Not herself.
Never herself.
Only her daughter.
And Adrian understood something in that moment.
Claire Morgan was not weak.
She had survived fifteen years carrying a secret that could get her killed.
She had raised a child while knowing someone powerful wanted them erased.
She had been beaten, threatened, hunted.
And still, her first thought was always her daughter.
That kind of strength was rare.
Even among killers.
“Everyone out.”
Adrian’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
His men immediately moved.
The apartment became a storm of controlled chaos.
Security teams rushed toward the windows.
Others moved through the hallway.
Weapons drawn.
Phones ringing.
Orders being given.
But Adrian stood still.
Because he knew.
This attack was not random.
Someone wanted him to know they were watching.
Someone wanted fear.
And they had chosen the wrong man to threaten.
Ten minutes later, the shooter was gone.
No body.
No weapon.
No evidence.
Only one thing remained.
A message carved into the wooden frame of the apartment door.
Three words.
ASK YOUR FATHER.
Adrian stared at it.
His men waited.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room understood.
The message was not for them.
It was for him.
His father had been dead for twelve years.
But somehow…
He was still haunting the empire.
“Boss?”
Adrian’s security chief, Marcus, stepped closer.
“We searched the surrounding buildings. The shooter knew exactly where the blind spots were.”
Adrian’s eyes remained on the message.
“Meaning?”
Marcus hesitated.
“He had inside information.”
The room became colder.
Adrian slowly turned.
“How many people knew Claire was here?”
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Only your inner circle.”
“Names.”
Nobody moved.
Adrian repeated:
“Names.”
Marcus immediately answered.
“Me. Daniel. Victor. Three security commanders.”
Adrian nodded.
Six people.
Six possible traitors.
Six people close enough to stab him.
He had spent years building an empire where betrayal was punished before it became dangerous.
Yet somehow, someone had entered his home.
His territory.
His protection.
And touched the one thing he was trying to protect.
Family.
Claire sat in the kitchen while Adrian cleaned the cut on her forehead himself.
She noticed.
“You have doctors for this.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you doing it?”
Adrian did not answer.
Because he did not know.
He had never treated wounds.
He had caused too many.
Doctors fixed the damage afterward.
That was how his world worked.
But this felt different.
This was not business.
This was personal.
Claire watched him carefully.
“You really don’t remember me, do you?”
Adrian paused.
“What?”
“Before everything.”
He looked at her.
“I told you. I knew Matthew.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Silence.
Claire looked down.
“When I first met you, you were seventeen.”
Adrian frowned.
Impossible.
“I never met you.”
“You did.”
She gave a small sad smile.
“You just forgot.”
The memory came slowly.
A summer afternoon.
A younger Matthew laughing.
A girl standing beside him.
Adrian returning home after a fight.
Angry.
Broken.
Unable to understand why his brother still believed people could be good.
A girl had looked at him.
Not with fear.
Not with judgment.
With sadness.
“You were there.”
Claire nodded.
“You were bleeding.”
Adrian looked away.
He remembered.
A girl giving him a handkerchief.
Telling him:
“You look like someone who needs a friend.”
He had ignored her.
Because Adrian Vale did not need friends.
He needed power.
Protection.
Control.
“I didn’t know it was you.”
“I know.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“You were too busy becoming someone your father would be proud of.”
The words hit harder than she intended.
Because they were true.
Later that night, Adrian stood alone in his office.
The Vale mansion was silent.
Too silent.
The kind of silence rich people bought because they were afraid of hearing the truth.
On his desk sat the photograph.
Matthew.
Claire.
The child he never knew existed.
His family.
A family hidden from him.
His phone rang.
He answered.
“Victor.”
The lieutenant’s voice came immediately.
“Boss.”
“You knew.”
Silence.
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“You knew about Claire.”
“No.”
“Don’t lie.”
Victor exhaled.
“Not everything.”
Adrian leaned back.
“What does that mean?”
“It means your brother left behind more than a child.”
Adrian said nothing.
Victor continued.
“There was a file.”
“What file?”
“The Vale Black Ledger.”
The name alone made Adrian sit straighter.
The Black Ledger.
A rumor.
A story whispered among old enemies.
A book containing every illegal deal, every payment, every secret agreement that built the Vale empire.
Most people believed it was fiction.
A myth.
“My father destroyed it.”
Victor laughed quietly.
“No.”
A pause.
“He hid it.”
Adrian’s hand tightened.
“Where?”
“That’s the problem.”
Victor lowered his voice.
“Nobody knows.”
Adrian stared at the photograph.
“Matthew knew.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because your brother was the only person your father trusted enough to show him.”
Adrian stood.
“And why didn’t Matthew expose it?”
Victor became quiet.
Then:
“Because the ledger didn’t only contain your father’s crimes.”
Adrian waited.
“It contained yours.”
The room went completely still.
Adrian’s face changed.
“What did you say?”
Victor continued carefully.
“When you were younger, your father used your name for certain transactions.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Is it?”
Adrian looked at the city outside.
The empire.
The buildings.
The money.
The fear.
Everything he owned.
Everything he built.
“You’re saying my father framed me?”
“I’m saying Matthew discovered something that could destroy you.”
Adrian’s voice became cold.
“Why are you telling me this?”
A pause.
Then Victor said:
“Because I think someone is coming for you.”
“Who?”
“The people who built the empire before you.”
The line went silent.
At 3:00 in the morning, Adrian returned to Claire’s apartment.
She was awake.
Of course she was.
People carrying secrets rarely slept.
“You found something.”
It was not a question.
Adrian looked at her.
“The Black Ledger.”
Claire’s face changed instantly.
That was enough.
“You know.”
She looked down.
“I know what Matthew wanted to protect.”
“Tell me.”
Claire shook her head.
“I promised him.”
“Matthew is dead.”
The words were harsh.
Too harsh.
Pain flashed across her face.
Adrian regretted them immediately.
But he needed answers.
“He died protecting you.”
Claire whispered.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“He died protecting you.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
Claire stood slowly.
“Matthew knew what would happen if the truth came out.”
“What truth?”
She walked to a locked cabinet.
From inside, she removed a small envelope.
She handed it to him.
“Read it.”
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a letter.
His brother’s handwriting.
Again.
His hands shook slightly.
The letter began:
Adrian,
If you are reading this, it means Claire found you.
Adrian stopped breathing.
I know you will be angry. I know you will feel betrayed. But please understand something. I never left because I stopped loving you. I left because I discovered what Father was planning.
A pause.
Adrian continued reading.
He was afraid of you.
Adrian frowned.
Afraid?
Not because you were weak. Because you were the only one who could destroy everything he built.
His eyes moved faster.
You think you became like him. You didn’t. That is why he feared you.
Adrian felt something crack inside him.
Claire knows the truth. Maddie is proof. Protect them. And protect yourself from the people closest to you.
The final sentence made his blood turn cold.
The man who betrayed me is the same man standing beside you now.
Adrian looked up.
Claire was crying.
“Who?”
She whispered:
“I don’t know.”
Adrian stared at the letter.
A traitor inside his empire.
Someone who had been beside him for years.
Someone who had helped him build everything.
Someone who knew his weaknesses.
Then his phone rang.
Marcus.
Adrian answered.
“Boss…”
His voice sounded different.
Fearful.
“What?”
A pause.
Then Marcus said:
“We found something in the security footage.”
Adrian waited.
“Someone entered Claire’s apartment building before the attack.”
“Who?”
Marcus hesitated.
Then:
“It was someone with your access code.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Whose?”
A long silence.
Then Marcus answered:
“Your own.”
The call ended.
Adrian looked at Claire.
For the first time in years…
He felt betrayed.
Not by an enemy.
Not by a rival.
But by someone he trusted.
And somewhere in Chicago…
May you like
Someone smiled.
Because the war for the Vale empire had finally begun.
