Chapter 4 - A Vow in Crimson

The wedding was not held in a cathedral or a lavish country club. It took place at 8:00 AM inside the private glass conservatory on the top floor of the Brooks Estate, overlooking the vast expanse of the Valley of the Sun.

There were no flowers, no string quartets, and no cheering crowds.

Present in the room were a federal judge who had been flown in from Washington D.C. on a private jet, three high-powered corporate attorneys, Vance, Noah, and Lily. My children had been dressed in beautiful, tailor-made clothes—Noah in a sharp grey suit that made him look like a little prince, and Lily in a soft white lace dress.

I wore an elegant ivory silk gown that Nathan’s personal stylists had brought to my room at dawn. It was simple, breathtaking, and fit like a second skin.

Nathan stood beside me at the alter, dressed in a charcoal tuxedo. As the judge read the formal legal vows of the State of Arizona, Nathan reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring box.

Inside sat a massive, flawless emerald-cut diamond flanked by two black diamonds, resting on a band of platinum.

"With this ring, I pledge my protection, my name, and my empire," Nathan said, his deep voice filling the conservatory. He slipped the heavy ring onto my finger.

I looked down at the glittering stone, then up into his eyes. "With this ring, I accept your name, your trust, and your family."

"By the power vested in me by the State of Arizona, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the judge declared, stamping the thick stack of legal documents resting on the glass table.

The second the ink dried, Daniel Cho—Nathan’s chief legal counsel—pulled out a satellite phone and dialed a number. "The marriage of Nathan Brooks and Emily Parker is legally finalized and registered with the state registry. Issue the press release and notify the trustees."

Nathan turned to me. He didn't lean in for a passionate kiss. Instead, he took my hand, raised it to his lips, and brushed his mouth gently against my knuckles.

"Welcome to the empire, Mrs. Brooks," he murmured.

Before I could reply, the heavy double doors of the conservatory burst open.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in his late sixties strode into the room, flanked by four heavily built men in leather jackets. His hair was slicked back, his face scarred along the jawline, and his eyes burned with an animalistic fury.

Arthur Brooks.

"Nathan!" Arthur roared, his voice like gravel scraping against concrete. "What the hell is the meaning of this illegal circus?!"

Vance and four Brooks security guards instantly drew their suppressed firearms, stepping into a defensive line between Arthur and my children. Noah instinctively grabbed my dress, pushing Lily behind his back.

Nathan didn't even draw a weapon. He didn't even flinch. He slowly turned around, keeping his body positioned between Arthur and us.

"You're trespassing, Uncle Arthur," Nathan said mildly. "And you're making a scene in front of my family."

"Family?!" Arthur spat, pointing a thick, scarred finger at me. "You think pulling a stray gutter rat off the highway and putting a ring on her finger satisfies the terms of the Brooks Holding Trust?! This isn't a marriage! It's a fraudulent sham!"

Daniel Cho stepped forward, holding up a golden leather binder. "Arthur Brooks, as of 8:02 AM today, the Brooks Holding Trust charter criteria have been completely satisfied. Mrs. Emily Brooks is legally registered as Nathan’s wife, and her children have been entered into the trust's secondary succession clause."

Arthur’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. "You think you've won, boy? You think a piece of paper stops what's coming?" He stepped closer, ignoring the red laser sights hovering over his chest from Vance's guards. "The Old Guard isn't going to let a glorified corporate suit run this syndicate into the ground. We built this empire with blood, not stocks!"

"And you bled it dry, Arthur," Nathan replied, taking a slow step toward his uncle. "You lost three shipping lanes to the Sinaloa cartel last month because you were too greedy to pay proper security. You let two of our private casinos get audited by the gaming commission because your men couldn't stop shaking down local vendors. You are an outdated relic of a dying era."

Nathan leaned in close to Arthur, his tone dropping so low that only those of us nearby could hear.

"I gave you a chance to retire gracefully in Cabo with a ten-million-dollar annual stipend. But you brought weapons into my home, in front of my wife and children." Nathan’s eyes turned pitch black. "You have until sunset to get out of Arizona. If I see your face in this state tomorrow, I won't just take your share of the trust. I will erase your name from the ledger entirely."

Arthur stared at Nathan, his chest heaving with rage. He looked at me, then at Noah and Lily, a terrifying, wicked grin spreading across his face.

"She's your weakness, Nathan," Arthur whispered softly. "You put a crown on a target. Let's see how well your bulletproof glass holds up when the real war starts."

Without another word, Arthur turned on his heel and marched out of the conservatory, his armed guards following closely behind.

The room fell into an uncomfortable silence. I looked down at my hand, the giant diamond ring suddenly feeling heavier than lead.

Nathan turned to me, his face showing a rare flicker of remorse. "I'm sorry you had to see that, Emily."

I took a deep breath, looking at Noah and Lily, then stepped up right beside Nathan.

"Don't apologize," I said firmly, my voice echoing through the glass room. "He threatened our family, Nathan. What's the next move?"

Nathan stared at me, a sudden look of profound respect flashing across his features. "The next move, my dear wife, is showing this city who really owns it."
