Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Gate

I followed Nathan down the grand marble staircase toward the main courtyard, my heart hammering against my chest like a trapped bird. Vance walked half a step behind us, speaking into a wrist communicator in rapid, coded phrases.

Through the massive glass security doors of the foyer, I could see the flashing red and blue lights of two police cars parked outside the wrought-iron gates. Standing beside the driver's side of the lead cruiser was Julian Vance.

Julian looked as slick and arrogant as ever, dressed in his expensive designer jacket, his hair combed back. He was holding a stack of papers, talking loudly to a uniformed officer while smirking at the security cameras mounted on the brick pillars.

"He brought cops," I whispered, clutching the fabric of my dress. "Julian’s uncle is a deputy chief in Phoenix. He uses the department like his personal enforcement agency."

Nathan stopped just before the glass doors and turned to face me. "Emily, look at me."

I raised my eyes to meet his dark, unyielding gaze.

"You are under my roof now," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register. "In this city, the police answer to politicians, politicians answer to judges, and the judges answer to me. Julian Vance is a minor insect who mistook your kindness for weakness. Do you trust me?"

I looked at the calm power radiating from this man. For months, Julian had made me feel isolated, small, and utterly helpless. But standing beside Nathan Brooks, I felt the heavy weight of an empire backing me up.

"I trust you," I said firmly.

"Then let's go collect your peace of mind," Nathan said.

The heavy front doors opened, and we stepped out onto the wide stone driveway. The night air was warm, carrying the scent of desert sage and ozone. Six heavy security guards flanked us as we approached the iron gate.

When Julian saw me walking beside Nathan, his smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by an expression of pure rage.

"Emily!" Julian shouted through the bars of the gate. "Get your ass out here right now! You took my kids! I've filed a report for parental kidnapping!"

One of the uniformed officers stepped forward, looking visibly uncomfortable. "Mr. Brooks... we have a reported domestic dispute and an allegation of custodial interference—"

"Officer Miller," Nathan interrupted, his voice smooth, effortless, and terrifyingly cold. He didn't even look at Julian; his eyes remained fixed on the officer. "Badge number 4192. Your wife recently had knee replacement surgery at St. Joseph’s, funded entirely by the Brooks Medical Foundation. Am I correct?"

Officer Miller swallowed hard, his skin turning pale under the flashing red lights. "Mr. Brooks... I... I didn't know this was your private residence..."

"Shut up, Miller!" Julian snapped, slamming his hand on the hood of the cruiser. "She's my ex-fiancé! She stole my money and ran away with my children! Officer, arrest her!"

Nathan finally turned his gaze toward Julian. The air between them seemed to drop twenty degrees.

"Julian Vance," Nathan said quietly. "You are currently standing on private property belonging to the Brooks Estate. Furthermore, three hours ago, my forensic accounting team purchased the primary mortgage on your commercial property in Scottsdale, along with your personal line of credit at First Arizona Bank."

Julian blinked, stunned. "What... what are you talking about?"

Nathan pulled a slim tablet from Vance’s hands and glanced at the screen. "At 6:00 PM today, your credit line was called in due to severe financial irregularities. At 6:15 PM, a formal complaint was lodged with the State Attorney General regarding your illegal offshore accounts in Belize. And at 6:30 PM, Miss Emily Parker executed a power of attorney transferring all legal representation of her children to my personal legal team."

"You can't do that!" Julian screamed, clutching the iron bars of the gate. "She's nothing! She's a nobody!"

"She is the future Mrs. Nathan Brooks," Nathan declared, his voice echoing across the courtyard like a iron bell. "Which means that every breath you take from this moment forward is a privilege extended to you by my generosity. If you step within one mile of my wife, my children, or my properties again, I won't call the police, Julian. I will simply buy the company that owns the land beneath your feet and bury you in it."

Nathan turned to Officer Miller. "Officer, take this man off my driveway before I have my security team detain him for felony harassment and trespass."

Officer Miller didn't hesitate for a second. He grabbed Julian’s arm, pulling him roughly back toward the police car.

"Hey! Let go of me!" Julian yelled, struggling against the officer. "Emily! You think this guy cares about you?! He's a murderer! He's going to kill you!"

I stepped forward, standing right beside Nathan at the gate. I looked Julian dead in the eye—the man who had terrorized me for two years—and felt absolutely nothing but disgust.

"Goodnight, Julian," I said clearly.

As the police cruisers pulled away into the desert dark, Julian’s furious screams fading into the night, I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for years.

Nathan turned to me, his dark eyes studying my face. "Are you alright?"

May you like

"I've never been better," I answered truthfully.

Nathan offered me his arm. "Come inside, Emily. Tomorrow, we get married."
