Chapter 1 - The Pact on Highway 93

"I am asking you to accept a business arrangement, Emily," Nathan Brooks replied, his tone remaining as steady as the desert horizon. "I am not asking for your heart, nor am I asking for your submission. I am offering you an absolute shield."
The hot Arizona wind whipped strands of hair across my face. Behind me, seven-year-old Noah shifted his weight, his small hand tightening around five-year-old Lily’s fingers. Lily’s belly let out a soft, audible rumble that cut through the low idling roar of the armored Cadillac.
I looked down at my children. My abusive ex-fiancé, Julian Vance, had systematically drained my bank account, burned my personal documentation, and left us stranded in the middle of the desert with nothing but two battered suitcases and fifty dollars in cash. Julian’s parting words had echoed in my mind for six brutal hours under the relentless sun: “Let’s see how far your pride gets you when your kids are starving.”
Now, standing on the scorching gravel of Highway 93, the man known across the entire Southwest as the ruthless kingpin of the Brooks Syndicate was offering me an escape hatch made of solid gold and heavy iron.
"Why me?" I asked, forcing my cracked lips to form the words. "You are Nathan Brooks. You could buy a hundred women with a single phone call. Why offer a marriage of convenience to a stranded mother with two children?"
Nathan didn't blink. "Because a high-society socialite or a politician's daughter comes with hidden loyalties, media circuses, and family ties that my enemies can leverage. You have no loyalties to the families in Phoenix or Las Vegas. More importantly..." He glanced down at Noah, who was trying his absolute best to look tough in front of the towering bodyguards standing behind Nathan. "...a mother fighting for her children is the only person in the world who understands the concept of absolute protection."
He pulled a sleek silver pocket watch from his vest, checking the time.
"My late grandfather’s charter for the Brooks Holdings Trust dictates that control of the primary holding company reverts to my estranged uncle, Arthur Brooks, if I am not legally married by my forty-second birthday. That birthday is in forty-eight hours. Arthur is a monster who traffics in human collateral and illegal firearms. If he gains control of the trust, he will use my legitimate shipping ports to expand his network." Nathan snapped the watch shut. "If you agree, my legal team will draft a prenuptial agreement granting you fifty million dollars in a blind trust immediately, full legal adoption protections for Noah and Lily, and a clause stating that this marriage remains strictly platonic unless you decide otherwise."
"And if I refuse?" I whispered.
Nathan turned slightly, gesturing toward the empty, shimmering asphalt stretching for miles into the desolate wasteland. "Then I will have my security detail drive you and your children to the finest hotel in Flagstaff, pay for your stay for a year, and give you fifty thousand dollars in cash to start over. I do not coerce women, Emily. And I certainly do not leave children to starve."
I stared at him. The media painted Nathan Brooks as a bloodthirsty demon who wiped out entire rival families without blinking. Yet here he was, offering me a choice with more respect and dignity than anyone had shown me in my entire life.
I looked at Noah’s pale face and Lily’s drooping eyelids. If I took the fifty thousand dollars, Julian would eventually track us down. He had cops on his payroll in Phoenix. He would take the money, beat me senseless, and take my kids. But as the legal wife of Nathan Brooks? Julian wouldn't even dare to breathe in my direction.
"I have two conditions," I said, my voice hardening into a tone I hadn't used since before I met Julian.
Nathan raised an eyebrow. "Name them."
"First, my children’s education and safety are non-negotiable. They are never to be exposed to your... underground operations."
"Agreed," Nathan replied without hesitation. "Second?"
"If your enemies come for us, you don't hide things from me. I am not a helpless ornament to be locked in a gilded cage. If I am taking your name, I am taking the risk, and I need to know what I'm facing."
A faint, almost imperceptible smirk tugged at the corner of Nathan's sharp jawline. "A woman after my own heart. Done. Do we have an agreement, Mrs. Brooks?"
May you like
"We have an agreement," I said.
Nathan stepped aside and personally opened the heavy, bulletproof rear door of the Escalade. "Welcome to the family."
