Chapter 6 - The Discovery

Two weeks later, the forensic financial investigation ordered by Judge Thorne yielded a bombshell that completely shifted the legal landscape.
Eleanor Vance called me into her office for an emergency briefing. When I walked in, she had three large manila folders spread across her desk, labeled with Marcus’s name and corporate accounts.
"Sit down, Claire," Eleanor said, her eyes gleaming with absolute triumph. "Marcus didn't just spend nine thousand dollars on a piano."
I sat down, pulling my coat tight around myself. "What else did he do?"
"Over the last fourteen months," Eleanor explained, sliding a detailed spreadsheet across the table, "your husband has been siphoning money out of a secondary corporate escrow account at Apex Logistics. He set up a shell consulting firm under his cousin’s name and funneled over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars into it."
My jaw dropped. "He was embezzling from his company?"
"It gets better—or worse, depending on how you look at it," Eleanor pointed to a series of wire transfers. "He used forty thousand dollars of that money to pay off Vanessa’s personal credit card debt, another thirty thousand to lease a luxury vehicle under her name, and the rest was sitting in an offshore account, preparing for what looks like a full flight from his marriage and his job."
I leaned back in the chair, my mind reeling. The man I had lived with for eight years—the man who preached financial discipline, who lectured me about spending fifty dollars on groceries, who refused to buy his daughter a simple music tool—was a criminal fraudster living a double life.
"Why?" I whispered. "Why would he risk everything for her?"
"Because he’s a classic covert narcissist," Eleanor stated bluntly. "He wanted to be the grand savior for a vulnerable woman who would look up to him like a god, while treating his actual family as an inconvenient burden. But his ambition exceeded his intelligence."
"What happens now?"
"Now," Eleanor smiled, "the federal prosecutors are involved. Apex Logistics filed a formal criminal complaint this morning. Marcus is going to be arrested by the end of the day."
She reached across the desk and tapped the custody file. "This completely destroys any claim he ever had for joint custody. A judge will never place a child with a convicted felon facing federal fraud charges. You are getting sole custody, the townhouse, and a full asset liquidation before the federal court freezes his remaining funds."
As I stepped out of Eleanor’s office building into the brisk autumn rain, my phone vibrated with a news alert from the local Columbus daily paper: Local Executive Arrested in $120,000 Corporate Embezzlement Scheme.

Below the headline was Marcus’s face—pushed into the back of a police cruiser in handcuffs, his expression filled with absolute, pathetic horror.
I didn't feel joy. I didn't feel vengeance. I simply felt an overwhelming sense of relief that the dark cloud hanging over my daughter’s life was finally, completely dispelled.
