Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary

On a warm evening in late August, we held a housewarming party in our backyard to celebrate one full year of our new life.

The yard was decorated with small fairy lights strung between the fruit trees. The sound of soft laughter and classical piano music drifted from the speakers across the grass.

Eleanor Vance was there, chatting happily with my brother Daniel. Aunt Sarah was sitting on the patio, laughing with Julian’s mother. Out on the lawn, Lily, Julian, and the puppy were playing frisbee under the golden glow of the setting sun.

I stood on the back porch, holding a glass of sparkling lemonade, watching the people who truly loved us fill the space we had created.

Lily ran up the steps, her cheeks flushed, her dark hair glowing in the dusk light. She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the sunroom.

"Mommy! Come here! I want to play something for everyone before cake!"

"Okay, maestro," I laughed, following her inside.

The guests gathered around the open glass doors of the sunroom, quiet settling over the yard.

Lily sat at her Yamaha upright piano. She looked out at the small crowd of people who loved her unconditionally, then looked at me, standing right beside her shoulder.

"This song is called Our Home," Lily announced in her clear, strong seven-year-old voice. "I wrote it for my mom. Because she brought me here."

She lowered her hands to the keys.

The melody began—warm, bright, and soaring, echoing out through the sunroom, across the patio, and into the quiet evening air. It was a song built on safety, strength, and an unbroken bond between a mother and her child.

I closed my eyes, listening to the music my daughter was creating on her own terms, in her own home, with a mother who would never let anyone tear her down again.

The dark rain of that night in Columbus was long gone.

We were home, we were whole, and the song of our life had only just begun.
