Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

By Friday, the fallout from the court hearing had hit Marcus's professional life like a tidal wave.
Apex Logistics had an explicit corporate ethics policy regarding romantic relationships between senior management and subordinate staff, especially when corporate funds were involved. Following Eleanor’s subpoena of the expense reports, the corporate compliance department launched an internal audit into Marcus Miller’s accounts.
That afternoon, while I was working on a design project for a major local client in my new apartment, my phone rang.
It was my former sister-in-law, Marcus’s sister, Sarah. Unlike Marcus, Sarah was a sweet, grounded woman who had always tried to keep the peace in their chaotic family.
"Claire," Sarah said, her voice filled with deep distress. "I just heard what happened. Marcus called me screaming... he’s been suspended from work pending an internal investigation."
I took a slow breath, sitting back in my desk chair. "I didn't want his job to be destroyed, Sarah. But I had to protect Lily and secure our financial rights."
"I know," Sarah said, sounding close to tears. "He’s an idiot, Claire. A selfish idiot. I saw him at our mother's house yesterday. Mom tried to talk sense into him, but he’s so wrapped up in his own pride he can't see straight. He actually blamed Lily for not being 'grateful enough'!"
"He blamed a seven-year-old child?" I asked, my blood turning cold.
"He said she was turning into you," Sarah admitted, her voice dropping to a whisper. "He said you were using her to make him look like a bad father. I told him he didn't need your help to look like a bad father—he did that all on his own."
"Thank you for telling me, Sarah," I said gently. "Are you going to be okay?"
"I'm fine," Sarah sighed. "I just want to see Lily. Can I come over this weekend? I don't want her to think her whole family gave up on her."
"You are always welcome here, Sarah," I said honestly. "Lily loves her aunt."
An hour later, there was a loud, desperate knocking at my front door.
I looked through the peephole. It was Vanessa.
She looked entirely unraveled. Her polished hair was pulled into a messy ponytail, her coat was unbuttoned, and her mascara was slightly smudged.
I unlatched the safety chain and opened the door halfway, keeping my arm on the frame. "What are you doing here, Vanessa?"
"You have to fix this!" she pleaded, her hands shaking. "Marcus was suspended today! HR called me into a meeting and told me I might be terminated for accepting unreported gifts from a superior! My ex-husband found out about the court filing and he’s threatening to take my son away!"
I stared at her, feeling a mix of pity and absolute disgust.
"You took a nine-thousand-dollar piano from a married man knowing his daughter was being ignored," I said quietly. "You invited him into your life because he paid your bills and made you feel special. Did you really think there wouldn't be consequences when the truth came out?"
"I didn't know he was doing this to Lily!" she cried out. "He told me you guys were wealthy! He told me he had plenty of money for both kids!"

"He lied to you, Vanessa," I said firmly. "Just like he lied to me. But I am not fixing your problems. You made your bed. Now you have to lie in it."
I closed the door in her face and locked it tight.
