Chapter 9 - Healing the Wounds

Three weeks later, the storm had completely cleared. The Falcone family had vanished from the Chicago landscape, their empire fully absorbed into Costello Shipping. The corrupt administrators of Lakeview Memorial were locked away in a federal penitentiary, awaiting trial without bail.

At the Costello estate, a different kind of transformation was taking place.

The grand, sterile mansion had finally become a home. The heavy mahogany doors were left open to let in the warm summer breeze from the lake. The sound of children's laughter echoed through the hallways.

Pamela stood in the garden, watching the triplets play on a soft velvet blanket spread over the grass. Leo was trying to take his first steps, his little legs wobbling as he reached toward Arthur, who was busy stacking colorful wooden blocks. Mia sat in the center, her wide hazel eyes fixed completely on her mother, a beautiful, content smile on her face.

The official DNA results had been finalized by the state supreme court the day before. Pamela Hayes was legally declared the biological mother of Leo, Arthur, and Mia Costello. Her name was formally etched onto their birth certificates, erasing the stain of Victoria’s fraud forever.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind. Pamela leaned back against Roman’s broad chest, letting out a soft, happy sigh as he rested his chin against her shoulder.

"They look healthy," Roman murmured, his voice warm and deep. "The doctor said Leo’s lung capacity is completely normal now. No signs of the premature asthma they were worried about."

"They're thriving because they're happy, Roman," Pamela turned around in his embrace, placing her hands against his chest. Looked up into his hazel eyes, she no longer saw the dangerous, terrifying mob boss who had walked into Giovanni’s Trattoria. She saw the man who had torn down a criminal empire just to give her back her name. "We did it."

"We did," Roman smiled, a rare, breathtaking sight that softened his rugged features completely. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, opening it to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by a cluster of brilliant diamonds.

"Pamela," Roman said, his voice dropping to a serious, deeply emotional register.

"For a year, I thought I was cursed to live in darkness. I thought my children were broken, and I thought I was empty. Then you walked into that restaurant, and you brought the light back into our lives. I don't want to just be their father and your partner in a war. I want to be your husband. I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never feel broken again. Will you marry me?"

May you like

Pamela looked at the ring, then up at the three beautiful children playing on the grass, and finally into the eyes of the man who loved her with the force of a summer storm. Tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled her eyes.

"Yes, Roman," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, a thousand times."
