Chapter 3 - The Conspiracy Unravels

The revelation hung in the air of the mahogany study like a heavy smoke. Pamela collapsed into herself, her shoulders shaking as a year's worth of suppressed, agonizing mourning broke free. She wasn't crazy. She hadn't been a bad mother. The ghost-kicks she had felt in her stomach weren't a hallucination—her children were alive, sleeping just one floor above her.
Roman stood up from his desk and walked around to her side. He didn't offer a hollow phrase of comfort; instead, he placed a firm, steadying hand on her shoulder, his presence providing an immediate anchor against her storm of grief.
"We are going to destroy them, Pamela," Roman said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth, replaced by a cold, calculating promise of absolute ruin. "Everyone who touched this. Dr. Vance, the hospital board, the administrators who falsified the death certificates. I will dismantle their lives piece by piece."
Pamela looked up at him through her tears, her face pale but her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce determination. "Victoria... your wife. Why would she do this?"
Roman walked to the window, looking out over the dark, manicured lawns of his estate. "Our marriage was a political alliance between two powerful families. Victoria was a cruel, selfish woman who knew that our prenuptial agreement stated she would receive nothing in a divorce unless she provided an heir to the Costello shipping empire. When she discovered she was barren, she faked a surrogacy arrangement in Europe. I was busy managing a war along the docks; I didn't question it. She must have contacted Vance, who specialized in high-risk deliveries, and told him to find a perfect match."
"A perfect match?" Pamela asked, her voice cracking.
"You," Roman turned around to face her. "Marco dug into your family history. Your mother’s family used to own a small logistics company that competed with my father’s thirty years ago. Victoria’s family kept files on everyone who had ever interacted with the Costellos. She knew who you were. She chose you because she thought a broke, isolated woman with no family left would be too weak to fight back if her babies 'died'."
Pamela stood up, her small stature dynamic with a sudden surge of adrenaline. "She thought I didn't matter. Paul called me too broken to matter. The doctors looked right through me like I was garbage." She walked toward Roman, stopping just inches from his broad chest. "But I am their mother. And I am not broken anymore."
Roman looked down at her. He had expected her to be fragile, to beg for money, or to collapse into hysterics. Instead, he found a woman who possessed the same fierce, unyielding protectiveness that he did. For the first time in his life, Roman Costello felt a profound spark of respect for a woman.
"Marco," Roman called out.
The bodyguard stepped forward. "Sir?"
"Dr. Silas Vance is currently the Chief of Obstetrics at Lakeview Memorial," Roman said, his eyes still locked on Pamela. "He is attending a charity gala at the Drake Hotel tonight. I want him brought to my warehouse on the South Side by midnight. Don't make a scene in the lobby, but ensure he understands that compliance is his only option for survival."
"Consider it done, Mr. Costello," Marco nodded, turning on his heel and exiting the study.

Roman looked back at Pamela. "You should change out of that apron. I’ll have the maids find you some clothes from Victoria’s old wardrobe. Then, you and I are going to have a conversation with the man who stole your life."
"No," Pamela said, her voice hard as flint. "I'm keeping the apron on. I want Dr. Vance to see exactly who the 'broken waitress' is when she tears his world down."
