Chapter 7 - The Collapse of an Empire

When Mason stumbled back to his corner at the start of the rest period, his corner team was in absolute panic.
Grant Cole had rushed down from the VIP box, forcing his way through security to reach the corner apron. He grabbed his son by the shoulders, shaking him aggressively.
"What are you doing?!" Grant yelled, his eyes wild. "He’s an old man! Stop trying to box him! Use your size! Tackle him! Slam him into the mat!"
Mason looked up at his father, his eyes bloodshot, his confidence completely shattered. "Dad... I can't hit him. He’s... he’s not there when I swing."
"I don't care!" Grant hissed, leaning close to his ear. "If you lose this match, we lose the facility! We lose everything! Do you understand me? You break his arm! You do whatever it takes!"
In the opposite corner, Marcus Vance handed Thomas a small towel. Thomas wiped his face calmly.
"He will come out desperate in the second round," Marcus warned. "He’s going to try a illegal tackle or a groin strike to force a stoppage."
"Desperation is the final stage of pride," Thomas said quietly. "He has reached the end of his noise."
DING!
Round two began.
Mason did not walk out. He charged like a wild animal, his arms outstretched, attempting a chaotic double-leg takedown to crush Thomas into the canvas.
Thomas did not step aside this time.
As Mason drove forward, Thomas dropped his weight low, anchoring himself into the floor like an ancient oak tree. He caught Mason’s shoulders with both hands, absorbing the entire momentum of the twenty-four-year-old athlete's charge without giving up an inch of ground.
The crowd gasped.
Thomas held the larger, younger man completely stationary in mid-air.
"Look at me, Mason," Thomas said, his voice firm and absolute.
Mason looked up, his face contorted in agony and effort.
"You asked me what I have ever accomplished," Thomas said softly. "I built champions who respect the floor they walk on. Your father built a boy who fears the ground."
Thomas pivoted his hips smoothly to the left, executing a classic, seamless shoulder throw.
Mason flew over Thomas’s back, crashing onto the mat with a sound that echoed through the arena structure.
The wind was completely knocked out of Mason's body. His eyes rolled back slightly as he rolled onto his side, clutching his ribs, groaning in absolute defeat.
He did not attempt to get up. He could not get up.
The referee rushed in, checking Mason’s condition, before turning toward the center of the ring and raising his arms.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! THE WINNER BY KNOCKOUT... THOMAS HALE!"
The arena burst into a roar that shook the very foundations of the building. Five thousand people stood on their feet, applauding, shouting, and cheering for the sixty-eight-year-old master.
In the VIP box and across the internet, millions watched as the undefeated champion lay defeated on the floor, while the man he had humiliated stood victorious in the center of the ring.
Grant Cole stood frozen on the apron, his eyes fixed on his fallen son. His mind raced as he realized the full extent of the disaster. The deed to Iron Harbor was gone. Mason’s belt was gone. His family’s reputation was destroyed on global television.
Thomas did not raise his hands in victory. He did not celebrate.
He walked over to where Mason lay groaning on the floor. He crouched down beside the young man, exactly as Mason had crouched beside him three days ago in the dirty water.
Mason looked up through tearing eyes, expecting the final humiliation—expecting Thomas to strike him, mock him, or force him to apologize.

Instead, Thomas extended his hand.
"The ground is the same for everyone, Mason," Thomas said gently. "Now... let me help you stand up."
