Chapter 4 - The Weigh-In and the Mind Games

The official weigh-in took place on Friday afternoon in the grand ballroom of the Chicago Convention Center. Over two thousand fans crammed into the venue, creating a deafening atmosphere filled with drunken chants, flashing lights, and heavy bass music pumping from massive speakers.

Mason Cole strode onto the elevated scale platform wearing gold-trimmed athletic trunks, expensive sneakers, and a diamond-encrusted chain. He weighed in at a muscular, shredded 185 pounds. He flexed aggressively for the crowd, letting out a loud roar as his followers cheered and waved banners bearing his digital handle.

When Thomas Hale stepped onto the stage, the crowd’s reaction split into a bizarre mixture of quiet confusion, scattered jeers, and a few hesitant murmurs of concern.

Thomas was dressed in a plain black cotton t-shirt and standard training trousers. He walked slowly, unhurried by the roaring crowd or the bright, blinding lights. He stepped onto the scale.

"One hundred and sixty-two pounds," the official announcer called out.

A twenty-three-pound weight difference. In professional combat sports, twenty-three pounds was a massive gap—a divide that usually spelled absolute disaster for the lighter fighter.

Mason immediately stepped off his platform and lunged into Thomas’s personal space, shoving his championship belt within inches of the old man’s face, exactly as he had done in the gym three days prior.

"Last chance, old man!" Mason shouted, his voice amplified by the surrounding microphones. "Beg for mercy now, and I’ll let you keep your mop! You’re way out of your depth!"

Thomas did not blink. He did not flinch. He stood motionless, his gray eyes fixated directly on Mason’s pupils.

"Your stance is wide," Thomas said softly, his voice easily cutting through Mason’s shouting due to its calm composure. "You are leaning heavily on your right foot because your lower back is tight. You have been over-training your upper body to impress the cameras."

Mason’s smile stiffened slightly. He sneered, stepping even closer until their foreheads were inches apart. "I’m going to end your life in front of five million people."

"You are afraid," Thomas replied simply.

"What did you say?" Mason growled.

"You are loud because you are afraid of what happens when the arena goes quiet," Thomas said. He turned calmly away from the face-off and walked toward the exit stairs.

Grant Cole, watching from the wings, felt an inexplicable knot of tension tighten in his chest. He had seen hundreds of fighters attempt to intimidate his son, but none had ever looked at Mason with such absolute, clinical detachment.

That evening, as night fell over the city, the athletic commission finally released the official fight card documents to the press. Tucked away at the very bottom of the document was the regulatory verification of Thomas Hale’s credentials—a formal requirement for any unsanctioned match.

A young sports reporter named Ryan Kelly, sitting in the press box, opened the PDF file and scrolled to the historical registration section.

His eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock.

Trainer Registration Code: 1988-TH-001 Name: Thomas "The Silent Hand" Hale Record as Head Coach: 142 Wins, 4 Losses. Notable Students: Marcus Vance (World Middleweight Champion), Gabriel Cruz (World Lightweight Champion), Julian Thorne (Undisputed Heavyweight Champion), Ethan Hale (National Amateur Champion - Deceased).

Ryan Kelly’s hands began to shake as he pulled up his laptop. He frantically began typing, realizing in an instant what was about to transpire.

The world thought they were tuning in to watch a wealthy young champion beat up a helpless old janitor.

They had no idea that Mason Cole was about to step into a ring with the master who had built the greatest champions of the modern era.
