Chapter 5 - The Arena of Judgment

Saturday night arrived. The Chicago Convention Center was an ocean of violent energy. Five thousand spectators packed the arena seats, while an estimated four million viewers logged into the global pay-per-view stream. The event had broken every regional viewership record in history.

In the red corner locker room, Mason Cole was pacing back and forth like a caged animal. His hands were wrapped in traditional white tape. He kept striking his trainer’s pads with explosive, thunderous strikes, the sound echoing loudly off the concrete walls.

"Remember the plan, Mason," Grant Cole said, standing by the door with his suit jacket off. "Keep him at range for the first thirty seconds. Let the audience see him struggle. Then drop him. Clean and brutal."

"He’s getting knocked out in ten seconds, Dad," Mason spat, wiping sweat from his face. "I’m not playing games with this old ghost."

Meanwhile, in the blue corner locker room, the environment was utterly silent.

There were no pads being struck, no loud music, and no nervous pacing.

Thomas Hale sat quietly on a wooden bench. Beside him stood Marcus Vance, Gabriel Cruz, and Julian Thorne. Marcus was carefully wrapping Thomas’s hands with smooth, precise motions.

"The arena is loud, Coach," Gabriel said softly. "The crowd is hostile."

"The arena is just air and metal, Gabriel," Thomas replied softly. "It has no voice unless you give it power."

Julian stepped forward, holding out a plain black cotton robe. Thomas stood, slipped his arms into the sleeves, and tied the cloth belt around his waist. He looked at the three men who had once been his students.

"Whatever happens tonight," Thomas said, "do not step into the ring. This is my lesson to deliver."

"Yes, Coach," all three answered in unison.

The arena lights suddenly dimmed. Heavy rock music roared through the sound system as blinding red strobes flashed across the stadium.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!" the announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers. "TONIGHT, IN OUR MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING... INTRODUCING FIRST, FIGHTING OUT OF THE RED CORNER! HE IS THE UNDEFEATED MIDWEST COMBAT CHAMPION... MASON 'THE KING' COLE!"

The crowd exploded into cheers and boos as Mason strutted out from the tunnel, surrounded by fireworks, security guards, and a entourage carrying his championship belt. He beat his chest, pointing aggressively at the crowd, soaking in the chaotic energy. He vaulted over the top rope and began violently shadowboxing in the center of the canvas.

The music faded. The red lights died down, replaced by a single, solid white spotlight shining upon the blue tunnel.

"AND INTRODUCING HIS OPPONENT... FIGHTING OUT OF THE BLUE CORNER... THOMAS HALE!"

There were no fireworks. No rock music. No entourage.

Thomas Hale walked out of the tunnel alone, wearing his simple black robe. Behind him walked Marcus, Gabriel, and Julian, keeping a respectful five paces of distance.

The stadium slowly began to quiet down as the crowd recognized the legendary trio walking behind the old man. Whispers began to spread through the front rows. Ringside commentators frantically looked down at their updated notes as Ryan Kelly’s article from the previous night finally went viral across social media.

"Wait a minute..." the primary color commentator said into his headset, his voice cracking with sudden realization. "For those of you watching at home... we have just received verified confirmation of Thomas Hale's background. He is not a janitor who picked up a fight. Thomas Hale is 'The Silent Hand'—the legendary master who trained Marcus Vance, Gabriel Cruz, and Julian Thorne!"

The commentator’s words echoed through millions of home speakers simultaneously.

In the VIP box, Grant Cole’s face drained of color as his phone began to ring frantically with calls from his sports executives.

Thomas stepped onto the apron, bowed slightly to the ring, and slipped through the ropes. He walked to his corner, removed his black robe, and handed it to Marcus.

Mason stood in the center of the ring, staring across at Thomas. The arrogant smile on Mason’s face was gone, replaced by a confused, agitated glare as he noticed the sudden shift in the arena's energy.

The referee called both fighters to the center of the ring.

"Standard open-hand combat rules," the referee announced. "Protect yourselves at all times. Touch hands if you wish."

Mason sneered, throwing his hands back down to his sides. "I don't touch hands with janitors."

Thomas stood still, his posture upright, his balance perfect. "You do not have to touch hands, Mason. You only have to pay attention."

May you like

The referee stepped back, raised his hand, and brought it down sharply.

"FIGHT!"
