Chapter 8 - The Choice

The stone terrace was utterly silent save for the sound of the wind and the pounding of my own heart.

I looked down at the man kneeling before me—the man the entire city feared, the man who commanded armies of soldiers and controlled millions of dollars in commerce.

He was kneeling on a stone floor, looking up at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated vulnerability.

"You love me?" I whispered, tears finally escaping my eyelashes and tracing a warm path down my cheeks.

"With everything I have," Diego answered, his voice trembling slightly. "I know our marriage started in the dark, Noelle. I know I was a monster who brought you here as a hostage. But if you give me the chance, I will spend the rest of my life earning your heart."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jewelry box.

He opened it.

Inside sat a beautiful, delicate platinum ring set with a clear, radiant blue sapphire—not the heavy, aggressive diamond he had forced onto my finger at the cathedral, but a ring chosen with care, light, and grace.

"This isn't a shackle, Noelle," Diego said, holding the ring up. "This is a promise. If you put this on, it means you choose me. Not because you need protection, not because you're hiding from your family, but because you want to build a life with me."

He looked at me, waiting, his breath held in his chest.

For twenty-three years, my life had been a series of cages. First my father's house, then my brother's cowardice, then the expectations of an entire city. I had believed that love was a myth invented to make victims obedient.

But looking at Diego—looking at the man who had fought for my freedom, who had respected my mind, and who had handled my broken body with absolute reverence—I realized that love wasn't a cage.

Love was the door opening.

I slowly pulled off the heavy diamond ring Diego had given me on our wedding day and set it on the tea tray.

Then I reached out and held my left hand toward him.

"Put it on, Diego," I whispered, smiling through my tears.

Diego let out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief. He slipped the sapphire ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, light and cool against my skin.

He stood up, reached down, and gently pulled me up out of my chair into his arms.

His mouth found mine—not cold like the kiss at the cathedral altar, but warm, deep, passionate, and filled with a fierce tenderness that made my knees go weak.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my fingers in his thick dark hair, pulling him closer, letting all the years of pain melt away in the warmth of his embrace.
