Chapter 5 - The Midnight Raid

The rain came down in relentless sheets over East Greenwich, masking the engine hum of three black armored vans parked along the wooded perimeter of the Martin estate.

Inside the tactical command van, glow from six high-definition security monitors illuminated Diego’s face. He wore dark tactical gear, a heavy black jacket, and a radio headset strapped across his head.

I sat beside him, wearing a dark raincoat, monitoring the live security feeds we had hijacked through a backdoor code I had planted in the estate's server two years prior.

"Guard patrol at the north gate is clear," I spoke into my microphone. "The internal sensors near the wine cellar are disabled. You have a four-minute window before the automated server ping alerts the main office."

"Understood," Diego’s lead operative, Marco, replied over the comms. "Team Alpha moving in."

On the monitors, four shadowy figures moved with terrifying, military precision across the landscaped lawns of my childhood home. They bypassed the swimming pool, slipped through the side entrance of the wine cellar, and vanished into the stone structure.

Diego watched the screens, his hand resting on the back of my chair. Every few seconds, his fingers would lightly touch my shoulder—a silent, subconscious check to make sure I was okay.

"Camera three," I directed, tapping the screen. "There’s a pressure plate beneath the third wine rack on the left. Marco needs to bypass the secondary relay before entering the cypher."

"Marco, execute secondary bypass," Diego ordered into his headset.

"Copy that, Boss. Bypass complete. Access keypad exposed."

I took a deep breath, reading the numbers off my notepad. "Code is 8-4-1-9-7-2-6. Press enter after the second chime."

A moment of suffocating tension hung inside the command van. The monitor showed Marco entering the digits into the heavy steel keypad hidden behind the vintage wine rack.

Beep. Beep.

A heavy, hydraulic hiss echoed over the audio feed.

The three-ton reinforced steel vault door swung open silently, revealing row upon row of safety deposit boxes, velvet bags of uncut diamonds, and thick leather binders containing the lifeblood of the Martin family empire.

"We're in," Marco reported, his voice filled with quiet disbelief. "Boss... there’s at least fifty million in bearer bonds and hard currency in here. Plus three encrypted hard drives."

"Clear the vault," Diego commanded smoothly. "Take everything. Leave an empty bottle of my uncle Mateo’s favorite scotch on the center table."

"Copy that, Boss. Clearing out now."

Diego turned to look at me. The glow of the monitors reflected in his dark eyes, revealing a look of intense, quiet admiration.

"Fifty million dollars," Diego murmured. "Stripped from your father’s estate in less than twelve minutes."

"It was never his money," I said, watching Marco’s team load the heavy black duffel bags on screen. "He stole it from union funds, from small business owners, and from my mother’s inheritance. It belongs to the victims."

"And to you," Diego added firmly. "Half of everything in that vault goes into a private trust under your name, Noelle. You will never have to depend on a man for your survival again."

I looked at him, startled. "Diego... that’s twenty-five million dollars."

"It’s your restitution," he said softly, taking my hand in his. "And we are just getting started. Thomas is currently sitting in a private room at the docks, waiting for a 'routine business update' from his security chief. It's time we go say hello to your brother."
