Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silk and Silver

The tinted windows of the armored SUV turned Providence into a passing ghost of dark brick, wet asphalt, and slate-gray sky.

Inside the quiet vehicle, Diego Ramos sat with his legs crossed, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal shirt. The silence between us wasn't comfortable; it was heavy with expectation.

"You didn't answer my question, Noelle," Diego said, his voice a low, gravelly tenor that commanded attention without ever needing to be raised. "Are you comfortable?"

"The seat is heated, the leather is fine, and your drivers know how to navigate traffic," I replied, looking straight ahead at the partition glass. "By any standard metric, yes, I am comfortable."

Diego tilted his head, his dark eyes fixated on my profile. "Most women in your position would be weeping. Or praying. Or trying to negotiate terms of surrender."

"Surrender implies I had something left to lose, Mr. Ramos."

"Diego," he corrected sharply. "You're my wife now."

"A title acquired through extortion hardly warrants warmth, Diego."

A quiet, dangerous smile flickered at the corner of his mouth. He leaned back against the headrest, studying the way I held myself—rigid, posture perfect, chin tilted at an angle that feigned aristocratic arrogance.

"Your brother wept in my office three weeks ago," Diego said, taking a clear delight in tearing down the Martin reputation. "Thomas literally dropped to his knees on my Persian rug, begging me not to execute him in front of his board of directors. He swore he would give me whatever I wanted. Ships, warehouses, political connections. And when I said your name, do you know what he did?"

I kept my gaze fixed on the road ahead. "He agreed."

"He didn't just agree. He looked relieved," Diego chuckled, though there was no humor in his eyes—only disgust. "He looked at me as if I had offered him a discount on a luxury vehicle. 'Take her,' he said. 'She's quiet, she stays out of the way, and she won't give you any trouble.' That is how the great Thomas Martin speaks of his only sister."

"Thomas is a coward," I said simply. "Tell me something I haven't known since I was seven years old."

Diego’s smile vanished. The utter lack of reaction from me clearly unsettled him. He was a predator used to the scent of blood and terror. In his mind, he had brought home Arthur Martin's pampered princess, a girl who lived in a gilded cage sipping champagne while her family ordered hits on his relatives.

"We aren't going to a reception, Noelle," Diego announced, watching my face for a crack in my composure. "There are no toasts, no dances, no family photos. We are going straight to my private estate in Narragansett. And tonight, you will learn what happens to a Martin when she enters a Ramos home."

"I am aware of my purpose here," I said, turning my head to face him directly for the first time. "You want to punish Arthur Martin through me. You want to make him suffer by corrupting his daughter."

"I want to break his legacy," Diego corrected, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, ancient fury. "He killed my uncle Mateo. He blew up his car while my cousins were sitting in the driveway. Arthur Martin is a rabid dog who should have been put down a decade ago. Since he's stroke-ridden and bedridden, I will make sure his bloodline dies in shame."

"Then you should have asked for Thomas," I replied quietly. "Because if you think breaking me will hurt Arthur Martin, you know nothing about my father."

Diego frowned, opening his mouth to speak, but the SUV slowed to a smooth stop.

The iron gates of the Ramos estate in Narragansett opened wide, welcoming the procession of black vehicles into a fortress of stone, sea fog, and armed security.

"We're home, Mrs. Ramos," Diego murmured, reaching for the door handle. "Let's see how long that cold mask stays on."
