Chapter 6 - A Quiet Evening at Home

The weekend passed in a blur of legal filings, asset restructuring, and quiet recovery. By Sunday evening, the Cross estate was wrapped in a profound, peaceful silence, undisturbed by the thunderstorms of previous days.

Inside the expansive, warm country kitchen, the smell of fresh rosemary, roasted garlic, and simmering tomato sauce filled the air.

Evelyn stood at the granite kitchen island, deftly chopping fresh herbs while humming a gentle melody from her youth. Near the stove, Mia—now wearing her new supervisor pin with quiet pride—was stirring a large pot of homemade pasta sauce under Evelyn's watchful, encouraging eye.

Daniel walked into the kitchen, wearing a simple gray cotton t-shirt and dark jeans, completely stripped of his corporate armor. He leaned against the doorframe, watching the scene with his hands tucked into his pockets.

For the first time in as long as he could remember, the house actually felt like a home.

"Something smells incredible," Daniel said, walking over to sneak a small taste of the sauce from a wooden spoon Mia handed him.

"It’s an old family recipe, Mr. Cross," Mia smiled brightly, her earlier nervousness entirely gone, replaced by the confident ease of someone who knew she was valued and safe. "Though Mrs. Cross supervised every single step to make sure I didn't ruin it."

"She’s a harsh critic, trust me," Daniel teased, gently wrapping an arm around his mother’s shoulders and pressing a kiss to the top of her silver head.

Evelyn smiled, setting down her chef’s knife and turning to look up at her son. "A good attorney is always a harsh critic, Daniel. It’s the only way to keep the clients from making catastrophic mistakes."

"Lesson learned, Mother," Daniel laughed softly.

They sat down together at the rustic wooden dining table in the corner of the kitchen—just a mother, her son, and the loyal young woman who had risked her job to protect them both. There were no board directors, no manipulative fiancées, no forged power of attorney documents, and no hidden cameras needed to verify who could be trusted.

The food was simple, the company was genuine, and the air was filled with peace.
