Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Mask

"Pack your things, Vanessa," Daniel said. His tone wasn't raised in anger; it carried the terrifying, flat calm of a death sentence.
Vanessa’s knees buckled slightly. The arrogant smirk had vanished completely, replaced by a frantic, animalistic panic. She took a stumbling step forward, her hands reaching out instinctively to grab the lapels of his suit jacket.
"Daniel... wait. Please. Just listen to me," Vanessa choked out, her voice cracking as hot, genuine tears sprang to her eyes—not tears of remorse, but tears of cornered desperation. "It was stress! The wedding planning, the pressure from the board, the media scrutiny... I haven't been sleeping! I didn't mean to—it was just a moment of weakness—"
Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't step back, but he didn't let her touch him either. He simply raised his hand, gesturing to the two private security guards who had materialized silently at the edge of the foyer.
"You had six months of moments, Vanessa," Daniel interrupted, his voice cutting through her frantic excuses like a buzzsaw. "You systematically isolated my mother, fired every loyal staff member who knew our family history, and plotted to hijack my voting shares in Cross Meridian. That isn't stress. That is premeditated corporate and domestic sabotage."
"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked, her mask finally dropping away entirely to reveal the vicious, entitled narcissist underneath. She glared past him at Evelyn, her eyes flashing with pure venom. "You're ruining my life over a senile old hag and a peasant maid! You'll regret this, Daniel! My family owns half the commercial real estate downtown—we will crush Cross Meridian before the quarter ends!"
"Your family owns leveraged real estate backed by loans that my firm currently holds as collateral," Daniel corrected her smoothly, a cold, predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth. "In fact, as of ten minutes ago, my legal team initiated a margin call on your father’s primary commercial portfolio. By Monday morning, the Hale name won't even own a parking garage in this city."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She staggered backward as the full, devastating reality of what she had provoked crashed down upon her. She wasn't just losing a wedding; she was losing everything.
"Get her off my property," Daniel commanded the guards without looking back.
Before Vanessa could scream another insult, the two massive security professionals stepped forward, each taking her firmly by the arm. Dragging her kicking, screaming, and hurling profanities, they hauled her out through the double doors and tossed her designer luggage out onto the rain-slicked gravel driveway behind her.
The heavy oak doors slammed shut, sealing the estate once more.
Evelyn let out a long, shuddering sigh, closing her eyes as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system. Daniel immediately knelt beside her, his strong hands gently cupping her shoulders.
"Are you alright, Mother?" he asked, his voice filled with a raw, protective tenderness that he rarely showed the rest of the world.
Evelyn opened her eyes, offering a faint, tired smile. She reached up, gently patting his cheek. "I’m old, Daniel, but I’m not broken. Thank God you listened to your mother instead of your calendar."
Daniel smiled faintly, helping her stand and guiding her toward the warm, quiet safety of the family parlor. But even as the immediate physical threat was removed, a cold realization settled into the back of his mind.
Vanessa hadn't acted alone.

The forgery on the durable power of attorney document wasn't something a socialite could draft on her own. It required legal expertise, inside knowledge of Cross Meridian’s corporate governance structure, and access to internal company templates.
Someone inside his own executive suite had helped her write it.
