Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

At 9:00 AM sharp, the heavy glass doors of the Cross Meridian boardroom slid open.

Julian Cross walked in, wearing an expensive tailored charcoal suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase under his arm. He looked confident, brushing an invisible speck of dust off his lapel as he took his usual seat near the center of the mahogany table.

Around the room, eleven other board directors sat in tense silence. Word had already circulated through the corporate grapevine that Vanessa Hale had been abruptly ejected from the Cross estate under police escort, but no one yet knew the full extent of the internal fallout.

Julian cleared his throat, offering a polite, practiced smile to the room. "Good morning, everyone. I trust we’re all here to discuss the quarterly logistics expansion into the Asian markets?"

"Not quite, Julian," Daniel’s voice cut through the room like a razor blade.

Daniel stood at the head of the table. He hadn't sat down. He wore his usual dark three-piece suit, his hands resting flat against the polished obsidian surface as he stared directly down the table at the junior partner.

Julian’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second, though he quickly recovered. "Oh? Is there an urgent legal matter, Mr. Cross? I thought my compliance division had cleared all regional filings by Friday afternoon."

"Your compliance division," Daniel said, his voice dangerously low, "did some exceptional work. Especially when it came to drafting illegal durable power of attorney documents designed to strip my mother of her voting shares."

The boardroom erupted into an immediate wave of gasps and startled murmurs. Several board directors sat up straight, exchanging anxious glances.

Julian’s face drained of color, but he maintained a rigid, indignant posture. He scoffed, shaking his head. "That is a serious accusation, Mr. Cross! If you have domestic disputes with your former fiancée, keep them out of this boardroom. I have nothing to do with—"

"Sarah," Daniel interrupted, not breaking eye contact with Julian. "Play the audio file."

Sarah Jenkins opened her laptop and hit play.

The boardroom’s high-fidelity surround-sound speakers instantly broadcasted a crystal-clear recording of a phone call recorded two nights prior.

“...just make sure the voting transfer clause is buried on page seven, Julian,” Vanessa’s voice echoed clearly through the boardroom. “Once Daniel signs the merger papers thinking it’s standard wedding paperwork, we control twenty-four percent of the voting stock.”

Then, Julian’s voice replied smoothly from the speaker: “Consider it done, Vanessa. Once the old woman is declared incapacitated, Daniel won't have a legal leg to stand on. Cross Meridian will be ours.”

The room fell dead silent. Every eye in the boardroom shifted slowly from the speakers toward Julian Cross.

Julian sat frozen, his mouth slightly open, the last traces of color draining entirely from his skin. He looked around the table, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that there was no escape, no legal loophole, and no corporate parachute to save him.

"Federal marshals are waiting in the lobby, Julian," Daniel said softly, walking slowly toward him along the edge of the table. "Along with representatives from the SEC and the state bar association. You are officially terminated for corporate espionage, fraud, and conspiracy."

Before Julian could even stand up, two corporate security officers stepped out from the side doors of the boardroom, placing heavy, unyielding hands on his shoulders and hauling him out of his chair.

As Julian was dragged out in absolute disgrace, the remaining board members sat in stunned reverence. No one dared to question Daniel’s authority ever again.
