Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary

Julian’s private townhouse on the West Side was the exact opposite of the Whitmore estate. It was filled with warmth, thousands of leather-bound books, sheet music stacked high on mahogany tables, and the comforting scent of pipe tobacco and cedar.

Julian’s wife, Clara—a kind, elegant former cellist—immediately wrapped Lily in a warm blanket and brought Emily a cup of hot tea.

"Victoria Whitmore is a dangerous woman when her ego is threatened," Julian told Emily as they sat by the fireplace. "She built her social empire on control. When she saw Lily’s talent, she saw an asset to secure her legacy."

"She's drafting guardianship papers, Mr. Sterling," Emily sobbed, holding her cup with trembling hands. "She thinks because I'm poor, because I work as a servant, I don't deserve my own daughter."

"She is wrong," Julian said fiercely. "Being poor is not a crime, Emily. And love is something money can never buy."

"What am I going to do? I don't have money for lawyers."

"I do," Julian replied simply. "And I have the finest legal team in the country. But we need to act smartly. The Manhattan Cultural Showcase is in three weeks. Victoria has already registered Lily under the Whitmore name, claiming she is her patron and guardian."

"Can she do that?"

"Not if we expose her publicly," Julian smiled, a cold spark in his eye. "We are going to let Lily play at the showcase. But she won't be playing for Victoria Whitmore. She will be playing for herself, and for you."

For the next three weeks, Julian didn't teach Lily technical drills; he taught her how to put her soul into the music. They practiced on Julian’s custom Bosendorfer piano, while Emily was hired as the Chief Administrator for the Sterling Conservatory, giving her a dignity, a salary, and a home she had earned.
